Russia sees only short term predictions. It has marked the US as disabled. But those 11 air craft carriers have to be all mothballed before they mark the job done.

Maybe. But again, people like Mearsheimer said the US would abandon Ukraine. Now that it may be happening the focus is on Trump, which is convenient for anyone who was arguing to get out, or who doesn't put much stock in the humanitarian angle for staying.

This is why I don't get why Russia would make peace. US stops aid, Russia rolls over Ukraine.

Edit: actually there's still EU funding. Maybe it isn't that simple. Maybe Russia is running out of troops and/or money.

My understanding is that Ukraine has defended itself well, much better than expected.

The most likely scenario is that a peace deal of some sort that relies on the position of the armed forces of both countries as at the status quo, meaning that in reality, Russia will have taken both the Crimea and eastern Ukraine. The big issue is whether there will be security guarantees, backed by European peacekeepers to deter a future Russian push to take the whole country...
