Yey! Susan Collins in 2026 election.
"New York Times" regular columnist Frank Bruni, castigates Senator Susan Collins and other Republican Senators for their lack of opposition to some of Donald Trump's more controversial Cabinet appointments. The headline on his column reads, "Susan Collins and Her Cowardly Caucus Bow Down to Trump."

"I wonder what, in the end, persuaded Senator Susan Collins that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had the right stuff to be the official steward of Americans’ health."
NYT

"He’s a crank and Collins is a coward. Worse yet, she’s a bellwether. Make that a church bell, the kind that tolls when there’s a death. In this case, it marks the passing of any independence, any dignity, any scruples among Republicans in the Senate, who are letting President Trump have whomever he wants and seem poised to let him do whatever he pleases because it’s the easy path, the one that protects them from his rancor and retribution."

"Collins’s obeisance is especially significant because she was once thought to be a potential holdout against Trump’s most reckless appointments and rapacious behavior, a moderate who would moderate him. I remember conversations just months ago in which political observers speculated that because of her and a handful of other skeptical Senate Republicans, Trump would have to resort to trickery — maybe recess appointments, perhaps the designation of “acting” cabinet members who didn’t need Senate approval — to get any outlandish picks for top jobs across the finish line."

"Oh, they have their talking points. Their rococo rationalizations. They tell the world or themselves that they’re simply respecting the will of voters by giving a duly elected president his preferred team. That they’ll be keeping a close eye on how these unconventional department and agency heads perform. That they’ll speak up and step in if such intervention is required. (Pro tip: Don’t hold your breath.)"

"I think of Collins. She in fact did vote against Hegseth, but that was apparently less a bold stand than a last gasp. She’s no doubt nervous about next year, when she’s up for re-election: mustn’t motivate the MAGA brigade to come after her. But what’s the point of the office if you’ve junked your principles to cling to it? And what’s to become of a Congress — of a country — that watches a disaster unfold and convinces itself that submission is the prudent response?"
NYT paywall

David Brooks NYT
"Over the past 20 years or so many of us social observer types have been writing about the horrific chasms separating the educated class (people with college degrees) from the working class (people without)."

Brooks cites sites difference in life expectancy, children born out of wedlock, number of friends and educational achievement of their children as statistics bearing out the differences.

"If America elected a populist as president, you would expect him to devote his administration to addressing these inequities, to boosting the destinies of working-class Americans. But that’s not what President Trump is doing. He seems to have no plans to narrow the education chasms, no plans to narrow the health outcome chasms or the family structure chasms. He has basically no plans to revive the communities that have been decimated by postindustrialization."

"Why is that? The simplest answer is that Trump really seems not to give a crap about the working class. Trump is not a populist. He campaigns as a populist, but once he has power, he is the betrayer of populism."

"In 2018 the organization More in Common released the “Hidden Tribes” survey. It found that two groups were driving American politics, which it called progressive activists and devoted conservatives. These groups are at opposite ends of the political spectrum, but they have a lot in common. They are the richest of all the groups in the More in Common typology. They are the whitest of all the groups. They are among the best educated of all the groups. When I wrote a column about the bitter feud between these two elite groups, I headlined it “The Rich White Civil War.” That headline still accurately describes what we’re seeing."
"You might say that progressives have it coming. The moment they began shutting conservative and working-class voices out of their institutions, they were inviting a backlash, and now here it is.

"But here’s the problem: As F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in “The Great Gatsby,” rich people are careless. They break things. The members of the Trumpist elite think they’re going after the educated elites at U.S.A.I.D. and the N.I.H., but you know who’s really going to pay the price? It’s the woman in Namibia who is going to die of AIDS because PEPFAR has been eviscerated. It’s the child in Ohio who’s going to die of cancer because medical research was slowed. It’s the future citizens of America whose lives will be worse because their state institutions no longer function. It’s the working-class communities that will continue to languish because Trump ignores their main challenges and focuses instead on culture war distractions.

"Here’s the essence of Trumpism: It’s to be blithely unconcerned that people without a college degree die about eight years sooner or that hundreds of thousands of Africans might now die of AIDS but to go into paroxysms of moral panic because of who competes in a high school girls’ swim meet."

We are the champions! You are the losers.
Take bigotry off the table and what is the GOP left with? Tax cuts for the rich? Cutting Social Security and Medicare to free up money for tax cuts for the rich? Actual Republican policies are deeply unpopular with broad swaths of the American people. They have to cover the poison pill with a candy coating of bigotry to make people swallow it.

Who knew? Well, we fid. No Republican has ever sacrficed their job.
But when faced with another test of courage—standing up to Trump’s disastrous personnel choices—both men folded. They are up for reelection, and rather than risk the wrath of a Trump-backed primary challenger, they’ve chosen the path of least resistance. Cassidy, once a voice of reason in his party, now falls in line with Trump’s demands, most notably after expressing concern about Robert Kennedy Jr, a known anti-vaxxer. The pressure was too great, and he feigned a change of heart. Young, who once showed signs of independence, has now found it politically convenient to keep his head down, and support Tulsi Gabbard, who he had initially expressed opposition to until, you guessed it, the pressure came.

And it's pretty funny. Republicans manage to look ridiculous even when in power. Trump is king, they are a rubber stamp. hearings are a joke.
That absurd quote comes from Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), who was a guest on “Face the Nation,” and was asked by host Margaret Brennan, “Vladimir Putin, it sounds like you would agree, is an accused war criminal. He is a dictator. There is a warrant out for his arrest, as you know.”
“President Trump floated inviting him to the U.S. or even visiting Russia himself,” she added. “Do you think any of that is appropriate?”
“It’s more appropriate than not talking to him for the last two years, which is what President Biden did,” Crenshaw responded.

“Talking is different than inviting him to the United States,” Brennan reminded the congressman.
“You can parse it out however you like,” Crenshaw replied. “But the reality is, is you’re going to have to get him to the table somehow.”
“He’s (Putin) not that cunning,” Crenshaw insisted. “I think let Trump do his campaign promise and play this out. Look, nobody’s going to take advantage of Donald Trump.”

Despite what Congressman Crenshaw says, the facts suggest otherwise when it comes to Trump’s ongoing capitulation to Putin.
“Trump appeared to sympathize with Russia’s perspective, saying it ‘fought for that land’ and ‘lost a lot of soldiers.’ He declined to say, however, whether Ukraine would be an equal partner in any negotiations.”

In other words, Trump has already been taken advantage of and sold out our Ukrainian allies. That was Putin’s plan all along, and now his buddy Donald is ready to give him anything he wants

Fun with our congressman who only won by 5000 votes. There are some MAGA posting support, but about 3/4 are negative on Mr Bacon

Tim: The country voted massively to reduce waste. If you don’t think there is not massive waste in all government to bad . Move back

Me: There is not massive waste. The work force is reduced from its peak and seasonal projects are all contracted out. Compared to Western countries, our expense is in the low end. The US federal work force is huge, but so is the country. Being America, there is only waste in courts as the government sorts out issues. More planes will crash under Trump, FEMA will be scrapped. Wait for the next Nebraska floods in spring.

Brian: I never imagined the United States would align with authoritarian regimes. Under President Trump’s administration, our nation has joined Russia, North Korea, Iran, Belarus in opposing a United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This marks a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, distancing us from our traditional European allies. It’s a stark reminder of how fragile democratic alliances can be and a warning of the potential erosion of our nation’s moral leadership on the global stage.

Connie (note she does not mention tax cuts): Republicans in Nebraska are counting on you to vote Republican Mr Bacon and to vote to eliminate trillions of dollars of debt! Thanks!

Joseph: Are you willing to turn your self into authorities for your part in the government fraud waste and abuse that has been knowingly funded by you and legislative branch since you have taken office?

Alex: It’s really weird to brag about your support of apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. You should be ashamed, but you’re not because you’re a soulless monster.

Jim: How about your role model selling out Ukraine?? Also, you are OK with a 40% reduction in the DOD budget over the next five years?? You've been awfully quiet lately!!!

Joan: when's your town hall Don? when are you going to explain to Nebraska why you sold us out to rapist, 34 time convicted felon. You may be scared of him, but you should be more afraid of the people you're selling out for a pat on the head

That's funny, back 2010, when First Lady Michelle Obama announced the "Let's Move" campaign to fight childhood obesity, a program that involved physical education starting in kindergarten, healthy eating, improved access to healthy affordable foods including growing your own, and exercise, people like Vivek Ramaswamy and Republicans where absoFUCKINGlutely outraged over "government overreach," "Soviet style communism" and telling parents their kids were too fat.
Vivek R now pushing the same (where did he go?)

I have honored Tim, not naming him, by a quote. They think they are "owning the libs" and for sure they are. But they think the deep state is going to be gone. They are extatic. But you can't kill deep state in two years. Though Dark Money has also chipped away at it, mostly with the Supreme Court.

As a matter of fact, Rush Limbaugh used his national radio show to paint Michelle Obama in the most vile and disgusting of racist terms (which I will not repeat), in part because of her efforts to address the very subject of exercise, physical activity, and nutrition in our school children.
Donald Trump awarded him the Medal of Freedom, right before Limbaugh died of lung cancer that he got from smoking.

Trump is not quite as clever as Reagan or Reagan's henchmen, but he was not brilliant either. A better actor.

I have no recollection of 1980, but 1984 I did vote. Like now, I saw Reagan as a con man selling trickle down. My dad, not the most aware in politics, got conned with the rest. My mom did not vote. I told my dad: “you are not rich enough to get anything from Reagan.” He looked away, and we never spoke politics again. He had a small business in Florida. He could run a business and somehow deal with city and county poltics.

Thinking of the genuinely outstanding dunces that the Republican Party has sent to the House of Representatives over the past couple of decades, names like Louie Gohmert and Michele Bachmann come to mind. It's a field with a perennial crop of contenders though--Marjorie Greene and Lauren Boebert have been prominent for a few years now. Latest from Greene, a cunning plan to return the the before-before-times.

'Marjorie Taylor Greene Promotes "Measles Parties" for Kids Amid Deadly Outbreaks'
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent Republican congresswoman and a staunch ally of Trump, suggested a return to "measles parties" for children.

...
Watch entire video.

They used to have measles parties, basically get all the kids together so they all catch it and develop immunity.

Then when I was a kid, they did the same thing with chicken pox.

Now, they demonize parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids.
...

Measles is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and even death. Before the widespread adoption of the measles vaccine, the United States experienced approximately 400-500 child deaths a year from the disease.

Encouraging measles parties for children undermines decades of public health efforts aimed at eradicating the disease and poses risks not only to unvaccinated children but also to vulnerable populations, such as infants and immunocompromised individuals. The recent resurgence of measles outbreaks in multiple states has already resulted in the death of a child in Texas.
