Tariffs are a tax on consumption. Such taxes are regressive. Those suffering the most now with cost of living will be the ones most effected. I know the average voter is stupid, but it shouldn't be hard to figure this one out.

We may be stupid, but we can generally be expected to understand good decisions aren’t necessarily those that cause the least discomfort.

I gave one reason why higher prices may be necessary, and that would also hurt the least able to afford today’s prices. But that doesn’t by itself make any decisions that may hurt corporate farms while helping smaller more responsible farmers bad.

On tariffs voters may wonder whether higher prices might be worth manufacturing, or other gains.

Today, I have good news to report from the Middle East.
I have spoken to the Prime Ministers of Lebanon and Israel. And I am pleased to announce:
They have accepted the United States’ proposal to end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

How are tariffs going to help small responsible farmers?

Trump to raise prices on American cars....
"Cars
The United States imported $44.76 billion worth of vehicles from Mexico in 2023, making it the number-one import, according to Commerce Department data."

....from Mexico.

Beats me, farms were just an example of how higher prices aren’t necessarily bad ie the higher price can reflect more responsible practices. They would also still hurt struggling people. But that may be an unfair example for a number of reasons.

Still, the idea of good decisions involving more than concern for price stands—something everyone recognizes depending on context eg environmental regulations potentially driving up energy costs.

No Sean, all things for MAGA voters at Walmart will be more expensice. The consumer is the only one that is going to pay.

They all did it, raise prices. Putting tariffs will raise all prices. Even things we make. Because they can.

Trump on Monday vowed hikes in the taxes American companies must pay on goods imported from Mexico, Canada and China starting on his first day in the White House, unless those countries comply with his demands to crack down on migration and drugs flowing into the United States.

“Imposing one tariff would mean another comes in response, continuing like this until we put shared companies at risk,” she said.

“For example, some of the largest exporters from Mexico to the United States are General Motors, Stellantis and Ford Motor Company, which arrived in Mexico 80 years ago,” Sheinbaum said. “Why impose a tax that puts them at risk? It’s unacceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in Mexico and the United States.”

Trump is said to want to open trade negotiations with Canada as quickly as possible after taking office.

Howard Lutnick — the co-chair of Trump’s transition effort and his pick for Commerce secretary — said in a CNBC interview before the election that “of course” tariffs are a “bargaining chip,” and would help remove barriers to American-made goods in other countries.

making deals with Mexico for fentanyl is not going to work. There are labs there that make fentanyl form two components, but they will not be found. Fentanyl is so potent that it is nothing like smuggling cocaine. The bulk fenatnyl weighs nothing. Make pills on the US side.

Alex Wagner: Trump (last) tariffs on imported washing machines raised consumer prices at an average or $86.

But this isn't price rises in aid of rewarding socially beneficial outcomes. It's across the board. All its going to do is increase prices. I guess some of that will benefit the small number of American industries that still exist. But it's a double edged sword - it's going to tank the economy.

Christ, if Goldman Sachs hates it we should love it! Tell me one thing ever proposed as a means to modify corporate behavior that wasn't sold by them as a threat to the consumer. Kiss my ass. Tariffs may be the worst idea, but ain't no way I'm listening to that angle...

In this case Goldman Sachs and the regular folk are in the same boat together. A torpedo to the economy affects all.
