Coming from an administration that often conflates being foreign-born with being foreign — and that is often accused of putting forth a vision of white Americans as “real” Americans and everyone else as suspect — an effort to strip people of the armor of citizenship can’t help but feel, to some, like more proof that the Trump administration is truly motivated by an atavistic, racist vision of “America,” and a desire to restrict the legal equality guaranteed by citizenship to “real” Americans.

Yeah, not getting sucked in like last time. America is simply dead to me. I won't be reading any news pertaining to the US for the next four years.

I certainly understand the sentiment, but (!) is disengagement really a viable option, or even a useful personal strategy? I'm thinking that if we really don't want to see the fash prosper we may need to reconsider our own level of democratic participation. Clearly voting from a limited list of liberals hasn't lived up to either our own expectations or their promises.

The last time that cunt got elected I felt nothing but anger and rage but I also felt alive.

Talking to Trumpsies and fash is a waste of time. They pay lip-service to 'debate' and 'free speech' but all the time they're talking to you they're only thinking about how to make you angry, and then because you're angry, about how they're going to enjoy kicking your teeth in.

But talking to others about the fash, about who and what they ate, about what they want for themselves and us, isn't a waste of time - nor is organising alternatives or resistance to the fash. There's always more of us than there is of them, and most of those seduced by the fash's easy promises are more likely to be like us than them.

I think I’d feel better, well not better but not as freaked out if we were both 20 years younger, healthier and had decent jobs, instead of being 66 and dependent on Social Security and Medicare to survive. We lose that, stick a fork in us, we are done.

In the general sense, the way this rhetoric works in America is that entitlement programs such as assistance for food and rent and subsidies for healthcare insurance are postured as wealth-shifting by liberals to support the lazy and undeserving efforts of the "takers" at the expense of the "makers." Repealing these measures is postured as getting rid of "wasteful mandates" that force people into regimented situations and replacing them with plans that offer "choice," where the choice is to accept, say, a useless healthcare insurance policy that pays out next to nothing and simply reaps premiums. Morally it's postured as compelling people to be responsible for their own outcomes, because of course in America anyone can become a billionaire if they just work hard enough and resist government interference.

Prior the ACA, healthcare insurance was a wildly lucrative business in the United States. It still is, although not quite as much.
