With pharmaceutical research it is more to do with how many functions take place in a mammal. All the organs and cell types. The animals are a quick test of those. When a drug advances it is more in the hands of pathology/veterinarians. The animals have to be sacrificed to see what problems they are developing. Most of research after finding a desired effect is to try to reject the thing you just invented. A very common reason to reject is a small effect: it does what it is supposed to do, but only a partial cure. Life extension.

What they are talking about can be done in cell culture. Very efficient to see if you are getting any desired effect.

Researchers say they have made a breakthrough in the treatment of type 1 diabetes which could replace the need for regular insulin injections.

Research published by Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute scientists shows they have manipulated existing pancreatic stem cells to prompt them to produce insulin.

The study from the Melbourne researchers builds on previous work by Monash University scientists, using two existing cancer drugs.

The research is still in its early days and the next step will be pre-clinical animal trials.

But lead researcher and Baker institute scientist, Sam El-Osta, said the potential treatment could be viable for children and adults in the future.

"What we've discovered is the ability to harness the patient's remaining pancreatic cells to influence those cells to behave like insulin-producing beta cells," Professor El-Osta told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"This could potentially modify the course of diabetes and potentially eliminate the need for round-the-clock insulin injections in some people living with type 1 diabetes."

By exposing the mechanisms involved, the study not only unravels a mystery of how the sperm navigates to the egg, but it also has implications for human in-vitro fertilization and dairy cow reproduction and provides new information for engineers to design robotic micro swimmers.

“By understanding what determines the navigational mechanism and the biophysical and biochemical cues for a sperm to get to the egg, we may be able to use those cues to treat couples with infertility issues and select the best strategy for in vitro fertilization,” said Alireza Abbaspourrad.
