Trump is a failure at revolution. He failed to install his people as acting secretaries and commanders in the millitary before Jan 6th. With them he would have achieved a proper putsch. Now he will just cause violence the week after the 2024 election. But Deep State will be ready this time. Trump will be free before the election sincecthe court cases are slow (Deep State, get this going! You have tools). But along with hundreds of rioters they will arrest Trump in Nov 2024.

Hmmm. I don't know. You don't have a great track record with predictions. I think it's more likely that he wins with a majority of college votes but still claims the Dems did a fraud, and then gets his playthings in the House to start ramping up voter suppression. I mean, he can still sit for two consecutive terms even if he's had one term already can't he? That's plenty of time for the Supreme courts to allow a third and a forth term. With the help of Murdoch's cryogenic chamber Trump could be in the Whitehouse until he's 99!

The US special counsel prosecuting Donald Trump on federal charges of trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat has asked the Supreme Court to launch a fast-tracked review of the former president's claim he cannot be tried on those charges.

Mr Trump has appealed against US District Judge Tanya Chutkan's December 1 rejection of his bid to dismiss the case.

The judge found no legal support for the position argued by Mr Trump's lawyers that former presidents cannot face criminal charges for conduct related to their official responsibilities.

It is rare for a prosecutor to ask the Supreme Court to intervene in a case before a lower appeals court has already ruled, but US Special Counsel Jack Smith's move reflects the urgency of the case ahead of the November 5 election.

If re-elected, Mr Trump could seek to pardon himself of any federal crimes.

Mr Smith told the Supreme Court in a written filing that the "case presents a fundamental question at the heart of our democracy".

Mr Trump's appeal suspends his trial, which was scheduled to begin on March 4.

Special counsel Jack Smith asked the Supreme Court on Monday to take up Donald Trump’s claim that he is immune from prosecution and can’t face criminal charges related to efforts to overturn the November 2020 election, in an unusual effort to expedite a judgment crucial for moving the case speedily toward trial.

Hours later, the Supreme Court agreed to fast-track its consideration of whether to hear the case, suggesting that a decision could come within weeks on whether the former president’s trial will begin as scheduled in March. In a brief order, the high court directed Trump’s lawyers to respond by Dec. 20 to Smith’s petition to hear the case.

Smith wants the court to take up the case before a lower appeals court considers it, allowing the justices to squarely weigh in on when, if at all, Trump’s trial should move forward. The special counsel’s move came 10 days after the trial judge presiding over Trump’s case declined his bid to toss the criminal election-interference charges, rejecting arguments that he is immune from prosecution.

In her Dec. 1 opinion, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan wrote that Trump’s former office “does not confer a lifelong ‘get-out-of-jail’ pass.” Chutkan, an Obama appointee, also rejected Trump’s argument that, because the Senate acquitted him in a 2021 impeachment trial involving many of the same events, trying him in federal court would amount to double jeopardy, that is being prosecuted twice for the same crime.

There is also a pervasive sense of losing ground, that the cornerstones of American life - home ownership, a decent wage that keeps pace with inflation, a college education - are becoming more out of reach for many. Polls show voters are worried about crime and nervous about the flow of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Trump is adept at channeling and packaging those fears, while still presenting himself as someone who comes from outside the U.S. political system. He is both arsonist and firefighter, who declares the country is in chaos and then offers himself as a savior.

As Weissman pointed out, it is a matter of settled law that US presidents have immunity from civil claims that result from presidential acts that lie within the "outer perimeter" of their official duties. On the other hand, there is no settled law concerning whether (1) former US presidents have any immunity at all from criminal prosecution for acts taken while in office, (2) if they do, whether that limited immunity from criminal prosecution extends to all acts that lie within the outer perimeter of their official duties, and (3) whether the criminal charges against Trump in DC involve acts that lay within the outer perimeter of his official duties as president at the time.
