More specifically, the Tennessee House of Representatives (state government) held a vote to expel three Democratic members who had participated in demonstrations on the floor of the House. The two black representatives were expelled while the white representative was allowed to retain her seat. Not a good look.

'Tennessee’s House expels 2 of 3 Democrats over guns protest'
In an extraordinary act of political retaliation, Tennessee Republicans on Thursday expelled two Democratic lawmakers from the state Legislature for their role in a protest calling for more gun control in the aftermath of a deadly school shooting in Nashville. A third Democrat was narrowly spared by a one-vote margin.

The split votes drew accusations of racism, with lawmakers ousting Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, who are both Black, while Rep. Gloria Johnson, who is white, survived the vote on her expulsion. Republican leadership denied that race was a factor, however.

The visitors’ gallery exploded in screams and boos following the final vote. After sitting quietly for hours and hushing anyone who cried out during the proceedings, people broke into chants of “Shame!” and “Fascists!”

Banishment is a move the chamber has used only a handful times since the Civil War. Most state legislatures have the power to expel members, but it is generally reserved as a punishment for lawmakers accused of serious misconduct, not used as a weapon against political opponents.

GOP leaders said Thursday’s actions were necessary to avoid setting a precedent that lawmakers’ disruptions of House proceedings through protest would be tolerated.

When they say 'expulsion' does that mean they can no longer hold their positions, that they're banned from the chamber but can still vote, or they've been suspended for a certain period etc?

They are out--no longer allowed to represent their constituencies in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

As it is, the Tennessee failed to take over county level election boards. Therefore it goes to the local level to replace them to 2024. They boards may replace them with... the same two men.

Gerogia legislature took over all the election control. Even then, the expulsed state level politicians can run again in 2024.

Does this mean that their constituents are exempted from taxes until new reps are elected?

There will likely be special elections but more immediately, Tero is correct; the expelled members will be replaced by local government authorities. Those local officials could in fact simply reinstate the expelled members. More likely to happen for one than the other, according to the article below.

'Local officials to select replacements for expelled TN lawmakers'
Local officials will likely appoint interim lawmakers to replace two young Democrats who were expelled from the Tennessee Legislature in retaliation for staging a demonstration demanding gun control inside the state Capitol last week.

The temporary replacements for ousted Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson will be selected by the county legislative authority, according to state election officials.

A special election could be scheduled before the end of the year. Jones and Pearson will likely be eligible to run again and possibly serve the remainder of their terms, officials said.

"I have no regrets. I will continue to stand up for my constituents," Jones said Thursday before telling his supporters to come back to the Capitol on Monday to protest when the House is back in session.

Meanwhile, the Shelby County Commission and Nashville's Metro Council were expected to choose replacements for Jones and Person.

Jones could even be reappointed to his seat more immediately if the Democratic-controlled council sends him back to the state house as his own replacement.
