One of the best parts of running, is running out of lungs...breathless, barely able to suck in enough air, and then I get my breath back, and that first big sigh feels SO good.

If you have some lung condition, of course that would need taking into account, but there is lots of time to learn.

Time will pass anyway.

Uhmmm, it's not like teaching your lungs to get better, like you train muscles... I mean, when your lungs just WON'T get bigger, because that how you were born with them. I tried, and I know, the faculty tells me I'm right.

I don't know if you train them to more capacity, but I am CERTAIN that I've trained mine to faster recovery.

In fact, one of the metrics tracked by my fancy watch, is 2-minute-heart-recovery-rate. That almost certainly correlates to breath-rate or oxygen exchange.

The worst of it is, normal results are slow and hard to see. Even more so as we age. If you want to try some underwhelming progress, the first part would be to pick the right goal. What you would think 'worth it', then pick a timeline, and calculate reasonable expectations.
