So Lia accepted herself as a woman, and transitioned to female, and lived her life as a woman, and her family, friends, colleagues, and everybody else accepted her as a woman, and then she "bumped into the reality of the situation" when some right-wing transphobes got #OUTRAGED for cilcks. Poor kid.

Call them 'right-wing' or whatever you want, heaps of people can see - at a glance - that Lia is trans.

My sympathy is because everyone would have supported and encouraged Lia's participation in the swim team (INCLUDING teammates and coaches!) leaving the wider world a bit of a shock.

Lots of people just assume Lia is 'gaming the system', but I doubt that is the case here. More likely, everyone on that team is just trying their best, and the audience caught on to the fact that Lia is a male, and made a bunch of memes, jokes and criticisms about that.

The criticisms are telling...most will be critical of one kid (Lia) while not assigning ANY responsibility to the rest of the team. ALL of them approved. Every swimmer in the fucking POOL approved. This harsh criticism, bumping into the reality, has got to be tough to weather.

Everyone on that team are kids. If criticism is deserved, it belongs on the adults who are in charge.

No nuance, no understanding that gender identity is a complex, multi-layered thing, and that trans-women deserve to be treated as women by society at large (with some possible exceptions in elite female sport, as I've already said). The fact is that civilised societies already do so, and one dimensional, bitter resentment of all except purely heterosexual men and women is the hallmark of the dinosaur right or religious fundamentalists.

Yes, the assumption is that sex and gender are perfectly bound. The rest of us assume that yes, sex and gender are tightly bound, and this accounts for the vast majority of cases where gender and sex align. But as with everything that's not the whole story, and we aren't surprised to find exceptions.
