Far from over and a caution.

It's not going to be over. The decision now is how to live with it, and I see no reason not to live as we were before the pandemic for most of us.

On the surface we will, but lurking at the back of our minds will be the nagging doubts - have my antibody levels fallen too low, do I need another booster shot, is it really safe to be in that crowd of people with no masks, is there a new variant, a new wave, a new pandemic and more lockdowns around the corner...

Why? Throw some numbers up that justify those nagging doubts. What makes you believe you personally are at great risk?

If things don't work out, one can always find work in the funeral home and cremation field.

The virus is still circulating, Europe is having another wave of cases and deaths, vaccination is not 100% effective, and new variants are emerging. I just think that most people will have lingering fears for years to come, even if many aspects of life return to a semblance of pre-covid normality. I'm not implying I am trembling with fear, but the mindset where the risk of infection was just something you never thought about has gone for good...

Sure, many people will be. But don't forget many never were to begin with, and we don't generally have nagging fears about any number of potentially fatal diseases, nevermind everything else likely to kill us.

The thing is, this pandemic has dominated the lives of people all over the world for a year and a half. It has usually been the most prominent part of the news, it has had a huge impact on individual freedom, and it has stirred massive political debate, as well as pushing virology and immune system science to whole new levels. The Spanish Flu of 1919 was the only comparable world wide event. It is perhaps not so much outright fear I see remaining for a long time, but a continued and somewhat troubling presence in the "thought sphere" of most human communities...

I hope you're wrong. How unfortunate would that be, and doubly so for a country like Australia which has had how many deaths again?

1817 total so far if memory serves me. 7 in Queensland, none in Cairns.

I'm far more worried about Covid now with Delta and opening travel up than I ever was with Alpha even tho I am vaccinated.
Delta is just too infectious and only heavy handed lockdowns keep it corralled....260 days for Melbourne and still not entirely under control.
Too many breakthrough cases and even a mild case would be difficult to handle.

If immune challenged are not afraid they should be and really the damn thing is erratic, so no vaccination can ensure a mild case for anyone. Scot as usual trying to defend the indefensible...Netherlands is nowhere near safe for anyone and is failing as is most of Europe despite high vaccination rates...there is no safety ....only a lower risk of severe disease and that is in no way guaranteed.

I'll take zero thanks.
Partner and I chatted this morning about moving to a once a week grocery shopping if any enters the community. She got her booster this week - I'm not due till next year.
I'll stick entirely to taking lunch with me when riding and stay in the rural areas. It's far far from over including the looming financial consequences. :nono:

Of the 8,787 people who have died in Texas due to COVID-19 since early February, at least 43 were fully vaccinated, the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

That means 99.5% of people who died due to COVID-19 in Texas from Feb. 8 to July 14 were unvaccinated, while 0.5% were the result of “breakthrough infections,” which DSHS defines as people who contracted the virus two weeks after being fully vaccinated.

Of those who were vaccinated the majority had serious conditions.

The idea that we all should continue as we have been for the foreseeable future is a difficult sell.

Not sure what you mean by that first sentence. Do you mean those who were vaccinated but caught covid? In reality, vaccinated people who catch covid mostly have mild symptoms. Tero's figures show a tiny number of vaccinated people for whom that is not true, but statistically, being vaccinated will prevent death for most people.

Again, your second sentence is also obscure. Please explain...

That's still 8800 people to bury or cremate. Lots of backhoe work.
