Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Currently in Victoria we are required to wear a mask at all times when away from home (but not when driving, unless the car contains strangers). This certainly makes sense when visiting shops or travelling on public transport, or walking along a crowded street, given the evidence of fleeting transmission of the Delta strain. But when we go for a walk along the trails near our house, with virtually no one about, I don't wear mine (but I have it with me, in case a crowd appears).

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
'Evidence-based-maniacs'
I've been listening to the 'Crime of the Century' interview with Dr. Kory, an ivermectin proponent. He's angry about people who insist on solid evidence rather than accepting assertions based on his clinical experience, the weak studies that he believes support the use of ivermectin to treat and prevent COVID-19, and anecdotal evidence (pointing to a drop in cases in the state of Goa in India where ivermectin is being used, but ignoring the fact that there is an anti-covid curfew in Goa that was recently extended). He actually uses the acronym 'EBMs' when he refers to 'evidence-based maniacs'.
The general sentiment in the interview appears to be that the damn EBMs are full of shit. Sadly for the opponents of EBMs, the big ivermectin paper was withdrawn, and at least one study showed that ivermectin is ineffective.
During the interview there is blatant disinformation being promoted--Weinstein says that the immunity of those who've recovered from covid is 'the same' as those who've received the vaccine, while the evidence from a peer-reviewed study shows that to likely be false.
Weinstein denies being anti-vaccination, but meanwhile harps on the 'massive unknowns'--possible long-term effects of the covid vaccines--and makes noises about negative reactions to the vaccines. One of the main studies he relies upon for that has been retracted. To his credit he acknowledged this after the retraction. Note that Kory also claims not to be anti-vaccination, but has not got vaccinated against covid--he's depending on ivermectin. Weinstein says right out that protection from ivermectin is just as effective as vaccination.
While it appears unlikely, it may still turn out that ivermectin is actually shown to be effective as a treatment for covid, but the EBMs will have to have their say, regardless of Weinstein and Kory finding that 'maddening,' a term they both use repeatedly.
