Re: The Coronavirus Thread
This is from the middle of an ABC piece about all sorts of current covid issues in Oz:
It is probably worth dividing that population in two. One group would be those whose occupation brings them into close contact with vulnerable people, which would include all health care workers and aged care staff. Some might want to broaden this group to include teachers, police and public transport operators. To me, no jab, no job is perfectly reasonable in such cases.
For the remainder of the population, it becomes a choice between the carrot and the stick (or a judicious mixture of the two). Positive incentives could include tax rebates or subsidised public transport charges for the fully vaccinated. Negative incentives could include the denial of certain services such as air travel, or only allowing vaccinated people into sporting or entertainment events. It will be interesting whether these potential actions are government or business inspired - I know some airlines have been discussing forbidding the non-vaccinated to fly with them.
I expect anti-vaxxers to violently oppose any or all such proposals.
I'm forecasting that this will become a bigger and bigger issue world-wide. At the moment, certainly in Oz and in many other parts of the world where supply issues are constraining vaccinations, it would be totally unfair to penalise people who are not vaccinated because of supply shortages. But when the acceptance plateau is reached, and it is clear that everyone has had the ability to become vaccinated, the question of how to deal with the unvaccinated by choice becomes very real. Most developed countries appear to be hitting a take-up plateau, where a significant chunk of the population simply refuses to have a jab. This is where difficult decisions will be required around allowing greater rights and freedoms for the vaccinated over the unvaccinated and even mandating jabs for some sectors of the workforce.

My hypothesis is that there is a wall or cut off point around 22 or so years for humans where the known 'age discrimination' of the virus falls on its own wicked segregation - it is a time when the brain and the immune system change a gear. Virus doesn't have the same grip on younger cohorts. So population immunity will kick in with a kick not a whimper.

The farcical endeavor of convincing blockheads to assist in preventing their own serious illness:
'New York City will pay people $100 to get Covid vaccine'
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has a plan for getting more people vaccinated against Covid-19: offer them a $100 incentive.
The mayor made the announcement Wednesday at a press conference. "It does not get better than that," de Blasio said.
Beginning Friday, the cash reward will be handed out to city residents and employees who make an appointment at city-run vaccination sites. An official said at the press conference that first-time shot takers will either be mailed a pre-paid debit card or be issued a digital one immediately via email.
"I personally believe that the guarantee that right then and there you're going to be rewarded, I think that's going to make a big difference to people," the mayor said.
When he was questioned about those who have already been vaccinated, de Blasio thanked them for doing "the right thing."
"It was the right thing to do for yourself, for your family, for your community. You did the right thing and the reward is you were kept safe and you're alive because of it," he said. "But, we understand it's been a huge amount of misinformation ... particularly through social media getting anything but the truth. We got a lot we've got to overcome."

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Typical American solution; pay people but never mind the people that have already done it. Corruption always wins.
There will be always people against anything just by being human. Here there are no real problems but social conscious plays a bigger role in Northern European Social Democracies than in Anglo-Saxon countries.

Paying people for not volunteering? In your world that is not corruption obviously.

Incentives aren't corruption.
Unless you can prove otherwise.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
It sticks in my craw to some degree, they should fucking well get vaccinated, both for their own sakes and the community's, but pragmatically, if it works, then fine...
