Some of you might have noticed that I like working with statistics and charts.

This amused me:

Rolling 7-day average of daily new covid-19 cases in Australia

Same data, same time range

proportioned against the UK and Netherlands.

I posted this on Twitter a few days ago.

One important difference you can't see in the graph: All cases in NZ are border cases, people tested at the border before entering the country. The last local transmission in NZ was back in February. Australia has mostly local infections now...

Fairy data. No relevance to the actual figures which are unknown. Testing is done so many ways that comparison is pointless especially in two remote countries which have failed when it comes to vaccination.

Australia squandered its Covid advantage – and wealth is deciding who makes it home
Jennifer Mills wrote:It would be easy enough to get home quickly if we had money to burn

“But aren’t you a citizen?”

That’s the first thing most Italians ask when I tell them I can’t make it home.

People here are baffled by Australia’s border control approach to the pandemic. It might have made sense 18 months ago, when a new quarantine process had to be established, or even eight months ago, before we had a vaccine.

But now I’m fielding questions I don’t know how to answer. One question in particular: “Why?”

When her work contract ended, my partner and I were were ready to go home. We sent off our shipping, gave notice on our rented apartment, said goodbye to our friends. We went on what we thought would be a last hike.

But no sooner had we come down from the mountains than our flights were abruptly cancelled, a week before takeoff.

The last 18 months have made us resilient; we already had a contingency plan. Still, the cuts to arrivals into Australia have thrown us, and many others, into a last-minute scramble for housing, work, visa extensions.

Before the arrivals were halved, there were already more than 30,000 people waiting for a subsidised Dfat flight. This figure will now be much higher.

That number doesn’t include a lot of people. There are many who want to get home but aren’t registered. Anyone with a commercial flight booked, even if they know it will probably be cancelled, is told not to sign up. It doesn’t include those who have already given up and decided to stay where they are; the frustration, rejection and simple expense all having their own inexorable logic.

When I got my second vaccine dose, I again found myself trying to explain why I couldn’t get home. The doctor knew about the outbreak in Sydney. “It’s seasonal,” she said, “that’s why we’re pushing here, it’s a race against the winter.”

“Yes, but only 9% of Australians are vaccinated,” I said. Her eyes opened wide in horror above her mask.

“Why? Don’t they want it?”

That is the reason why I dont rely on that type of data. You cant use for anything really except pretty charts.

Not even when RIVM tells you about excess mortality rates due to the Covid-19 pandemic?
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has noted the cause of death for all deaths in the first eleven months of 2020. The cause of death is recorded by the attending physician. If the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 played a crucial role in the patient’s death, as assessed by the physician, then COVID-19 is recorded as the cause of death. The data shows that the elevated mortality rate until 1 December 2020 was due to COVID-19, with the exception of elevated mortality during the heat wave in August 2020.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) only counts a person who died as a COVID-19 death if the attending physician recorded COVID-19 as the “immediate cause of death”. A person who died after a car accident and also happened to test positive for COVID-19 is not counted as a COVID-19 death.

Why is Dutch data not the best data?
Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.
Details on how to do that can be found here.

Why Dutch data not the best data?
I don't know if the Dutch data are the best in the world, but they are pretty detailed, updated daily and publicly available. You can download the relevant file by RIVM from here and drop it into your spreadsheet program of choice*. Since your spreadsheet software is probably limited to 1,048,576 rows per page you'll have to chunk the CSV file first, though. It currently takes up more than 1.73 million rows - one for each positive test result reported to RIVM.

Description of the data file (per Google translate):
Covid-19 characteristics per case nationwide

Type of resources: Dataset

This file contains the following characteristics per case tested positive in the Netherlands:

Date for statistics, Age group, Sex, Hospital admission, Death, Week of death, Province, Notifying GGD

The file is structured as follows: A record for every laboratory confirmed COVID-19 patient in the Netherlands, since the first COVID-19 report in the Netherlands on 27/02/2020 (Date for statistics may be earlier). The file is refreshed daily at 4 pm, based on the data as registered at 10 am that day in the national system for notifiable infectious diseases (Osiris AIZ).

Description of the variables

Date_file: Date and time when the data was published by RIVM

Date_statistics: Date for statistic; first day of illness, if unknown, date lab positive, if unknown, report date to GGD (format: yyyy-mm-dd)

Date_statistics_type: Type of date that was available for date for the variable "Date for statistics", where:
DOO = Date of disease onset : First day of illness as reported by GGD. Please note: it is not always known whether this first day of illness was really Covid-19.
DPL = Date of first Positive Labresult : Date of the (first) positive lab result.
DON = Date of Notification : Date on which the notification was received by the GGD
*Or you could set up a database for it. MS Access will do. So will Open Office's Apache, which is freeware.

Especially when you compare two Dutch Countries. Why does Belgium have fewer cases compared to the Nether Regions?
