Not that these Games and the IOC’s standing weren’t deeply flawed prior to the pandemic. As at every Olympics, costs have spiralled and Japan will have to stump up more than $30bn (£22bn), of which the IOC will not be paying a cent. Along the way there has been the usual combination of expensive white-elephant stadiums, allegations of corruption in the bid process and in allocating contracts, and the forced eviction of citizens from their homes.

I dont think it will have the legs to reach Brisbane.

There are fears yesterday's anti-lockdown protest in Sydney could be a COVID-19 "superspreader event", as the city struggles to contain a growing outbreak of the Delta variant.

More than 50 people were charged and the CBD was shut down for several hours after thousands of demonstrators breached public health orders and marched together.

Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour have been in lockdown for more than four weeks.

Despite that, the state's COVID-19 outbreak is getting worse, and a record 163 new cases were announced yesterday.

The protest enraged NSW Police Minister David Elliott, who condemned it as "a whole lot of halfwits" participating in an illegal "superspreader event".

On the difficulties of clamping down on protest organisers:

Commissioner Fuller said: "There are no organisers that we can take to the Supreme Court to stop the protests happening, which means they're a bunch of anarchists," he said.

Since they are mainly right-wing conspiracy theory nut jobs, "anarchist" is a rather strange label. However, political fault lines are getting weirder and weirder - I can't keep up...
