A drop bear virus, -shudder
I was given a year of free milkshakes once. The year passed and I hadn’t bothered to get even one.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I was wondering what happened in the UK. It was far advanced with vaccination than most European countries but today it has to deal with a massive outbreak of the Delta variant where as here there hardly any sign of this variant as it makes up officially only 0,01% of the figures. It does not add up. Were those vaccinations genuine or was it Johnson pulling another fast one? Was the Indian community vaccinated or were they relying on old wives remedies?
Lifting of the restrictions is being speeded up here and face masks and social distancing (nobody bothers about that anymore) may disappear in July.
I have been fully vaccinated so why should I wear a face mask is my question.

There are a lot more people traveling from India to the UK than traveling from India to the Netherlands.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 8:50 amI was wondering what happened in the UK. Still only 50% of the population are fully vaccinated in the UK.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 8:50 amIt does not add up. Were those vaccinations genuine or was it Johnson pulling another fast one? Was the Indian community vaccinated or were they relying on old wives

Because you can still get infected and spread the virus. The vaccination reduces illness and lowers the chance of getting infected and spreading the virus but not to 0.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Nine. The first reason does not answer the massive outbreak of the Delta virus. Did the Asian community in the UK take up the vaccination or are the figures (which I suspect) not genuine? Who trusts Johnson anyway?
Vaccination has been proven very effective in most countries so why not the UK?
I have 98% immunity so for the 2% I must wear a mask that never has been proven to work?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Because the Delta Variant can overcome the vaccination better than other variants. It has advantages over other variants where many people are partly but not fully vaccinated. We'll eventually see the same happening in the US or continental Europe if the Delta arrives here in time before the vaccination rate increases further.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 9:11 amNine. No, you don't. Vaccination studies did not look at immunity. They looked at symptom rates. The > 90% efficacy of the m-rna vaccines refers to prevention of symptoms. But it will not be 98% for you because the vaccines are less efficient for older people.

The rise in cases of the delta variant has little to do with vaccination rollout. More to do with how the govt has botched messaging and been making policy and issuing advice on the hoof due to the increasing tensions within the Tory party promulgated by the noisy corporatist wing taking issue with socially-minded expert analysis and recommendations. Add that to the fact that the govt kept the borders open and are still accepting flights under an unmonitored 'good faith' self-isolation protocol, the general breakdown of the staged end of the lockdown plan, the work and housing situation of people in deprived areas, the fact that people are still not paid to stay at home when they get a positive test result such that many people are not reporting potential asymptomatic infection and still going to work, and it's not surprising that we're seeing an exponential rise in cases. The good news is that this is not transferring into the kind of proportional rises in hospital admissions we saw last year and over the winter. The bad news is that we're seeing more younger people suffering severe infections even while the mortality rate been bouncing below 10 a day for the last few weeks.
On the other point, vaccinations don't stop you becoming infected, they just make your body a lot better at dealing with the contagious agent when you do. Vaccinated people can still pass on an infection, although the risk of doing so is significantly lower when compared to an unvaccinated person. So at this point wearing a face mask in public is still a simple measure people can take to knock those risks back even further.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Linus Torvalds was "clearly unamused" by a "humanoid conspiracy theory, and also on its discussion in a Linux kernel topic thread," reports Neowin. They add that Torvalds "weighed in quite heavily with some very strong language, mixed with some biology lessons..."
Here's an excerpt from Torvalds' response (as shared by Slashdot reader Hmmmmmm):
Here's an excerpt from Torvalds' response (as shared by Slashdot reader Hmmmmmm):
https://science.slashdot.org/story/21/0 ... iling-listPlease keep your insane and technically incorrect anti-vax comments to yourself.
You don't know what you are talking about, you don't know what mRNA is, and you're spreading idiotic lies. Maybe you do so unwittingly, because of bad education. Maybe you do so because you've talked to "experts" or watched youtube videos by charlatans that don't know what they are talking about.
But dammit, regardless of where you have gotten your mis-information from, any Linux kernel discussion list isn't going to have your idiotic drivel pass uncontested from me.
Vaccines have saved the lives of literally tens of millions of people.
Just for your edification in case you are actually willing to be educated: mRNA doesn't change your genetic sequence in any way. It is the exact same intermediate - and temporary - kind of material that your cells generate internally all the time as part of your normal cell processes, and all that the mRNA vaccines do is to add a dose their own specialized sequence that then makes your normal cell machinery generate that spike protein so that your body learns how to recognize it.
The half-life of mRNA is a few hours. Any injected mRNA will be all gone from your body in a day or two. It doesn't change anything long-term, except for that natural "your body now knows how to recognize and fight off a new foreign protein" (which then tends to fade over time too, but lasts a lot longer than a few days). And yes, while your body learns to fight off that foreign material, you may feel like shit for a while. That's normal, and it's your natural response to your cells spending resources on learning how to deal with the new threat.
And of the vaccines, the mRNA ones are the most modern, and the most targeted - exactly because they do *not* need to have any of the other genetic material that you traditionally have in a vaccine (ie no need for basically the whole - if weakened - bacterial or virus genetic material). So the mRNA vaccines actually have *less* of that foreign material in them than traditional vaccines do. And a *lot* less than the very real and actual COVID-19 virus that is spreading in your neighborhood.
Honestly, anybody who has told you differently, and who has told you that it changes your genetic material, is simply uneducated. You need to stop believing the anti-vax lies, and you need to start protecting your family and the people around you. Get vaccinated...
Get vaccinated. Stop believing the anti-vax lies.
And if you insist on believing in the crazy conspiracy theories, at least SHUT THE HELL UP about it on Linux kernel discussion lists.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
CA has problems. There is a huge population of illegals, for example. They are afraid of being deported after vaccination. Especially if you get two.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
So it was the illegal aliens that voted Trump?
