The Coronavirus Thread
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Are there polls indicating if people want more, or less policing?
The political org definitely wants them defunded, but political org's can be a bit single-minded about some issues.

You are infecting the virus thread. Stick to Wuhan or Fauci.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Speaking of which, Tero, how do you feel about your earlier dismissal of the lab leak hypothesis?
Do you feel lied to, now that Fauci flip-flopped again?

Old news, ignored vigorously by a media calling the lab leak 'racist', while not considering the wet market theory as similarly racist.Three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) were hospitalised in November 2019 with symptoms 'consistent with Covid-19', the Wall Street Journal reported. That is at least a month before Beijing officially reported the existence of a new respiratory illness to the world on December 31, 2019

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
There was no lab leak. The research with bats is worthwhile, and in the long run will pay off. Bats carry a large number of other viruses.

Why didn't the CIA pick it up? They had operatives in Wuhan.Cunt wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 3:31 pmSpeaking of which, Tero, how do you feel about your earlier dismissal of the lab leak hypothesis?

Can people try and stay on topic here please. Other interesting stuff can go to other threads or to new threads etc.
Cheers.

This would be helpful for me. I seldom have time to read all the active threads, so derails cut down on reading just what I'm most interested in.
Pretty please?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I'm a little worried that the UK government might be incapable of learning from past slow-footedness. While the hospital admissions and daily deaths remain very low at the moment the number of infected cases has jumped by c.30% in a week. We should know from past experience that there's a lag between the cases rising and hospital admissions and daily deaths going up, and that if we wait for those particular numbers to start looking bad before acting then, to a great extent, it's already too late. The vaccination program is going to have an significant impact, though exactly how that will be played out in the population isn't so clear. Will rising infection rates lead to more younger people or unvaccinated adults requiring hospital treatment for example? At the moment I fear it's going to take another wave/lockdown before people really start to understand that the economy is a fully-owned subsidiary of the health system.

On the conspiracy theories of these and similar protestors: does anyone remember the Zika virus conspiracies? I seem to remember some study or other identifying around 50 different conspiracy theories about that. It may sound a tad tautological, but people prone to conspiratorial thinking are more likely to believe conspiracy theories - but then again I would say that wouldn't I?Anti-vaccine protesters temporarily close Westfield shopping centre in London – video
Anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown protesters were forced back by police officers as they stormed Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd's Bush, west London. The incident occurred after a mass march snaking about 12 miles through London, starting in Parliament Square and reaching as far west as Hammersmith. The Metropolitan Police temporarily closed the Westfield shopping centre as a result of the protest.
'The 3rd demo is now at Westfield and is causing significant disruption to the local community and businesses,' The Metropolitan police event twitter account posted. 'The MPS strongly urge those who are taking part in this demo to go home. Failure to do so may result in enforcement action being taken'

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
We had an anti-vax and anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne yesterday. Totally against the current rules of no public gatherings, of course... (I note in passing that our XR group, good citizens that we are, cancelled our planned protest...
)
Many were arrested, there was violence and anger. I don't get the anti-vaxxer reasoning - if you think there is something dangerous or wrong about getting the jab, then simply don't get one. No one is going to hold you down and inject you against your will...

It's just like abortion. And gay marriage. It's a mystery to me, other than they want the old world of 1950.

I think one of the worries is that there will be a 'vaccine passport', and the problems around it.JimC wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 9:58 pmWe had an anti-vax and anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne yesterday. Kooky conspiracy theorists...
In unrelated news, some regions are easing required isolation periods for people who have the vaccine.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I don't think they see themselves as protesting only on their own behalf - as you say, they could just refuse and that would be it, unless vaccination was mandatory. In their minds they must be protesting on everyone's behalf and challenging the idea that everyone, or perhaps anyone, should get vaccinated in the first place or that there should be public health measure put in place to protect the high riskers. Maybe it stems from a "I don't see why I should do anything for anybody else's benefit, and you shouldn't either' kind of sentiment - extreme individualism or something?JimC wrote: ↑Sat May 29, 2021 9:58 pmWe had an anti-vax and anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne yesterday.
