Unions are not all the same. The Painters and Dockers were literally a criminal organisation specialising in corruption and murder. They were also well connected with organised crime. The Builders Labourers Federation was corrupt, selling out their members for backhanders. The Shop Assistants Union was, and still is incompetent. The Coles and Woolworths chains that own about 70% of the grocery market between them tell them what a good deal is and the union officials believe them. The Transport Workers Union officials are excellent and reasonable negotiators. Union members earn 10 or 15% more than non-union workers in the same jobs and the transport companies still make a profit. I was a member of the TWU on and off for about 30 years and happily so.

If employees were given a choice of unions, it might work, but so far I haven't seen a union I wanted to be part of. Had to join a couple anyway, but none would have convinced me on its merits.

Forced 'membership' and 'brotherhood' creeped me out.

There was nothing "forced" about membership of the Teacher's Union I belonged to. Only about half our staff belonged. The union did an excellent job of collective bargaining for pay rises and teaching conditions. The non-union staff got all the benefits of those pay rises without paying a cent in union fees...

One thing they didn't get, though, was union assistance in the case of a dispute with employers. I only used that service once, but they were very useful...

No, one thing I'll give my old school (full of what you might call progressive catholics) is that they didn't mind having a tame atheist on staff...
