The anti-mask paper from Medical Hypotheses is being retracted. It's big tech/big med/big government censorship I tells ya.

'Elsevier journal to retract widely debunked masks study whose author claimed a Stanford affiliation'
A study that warned of the perils of using face masks as a precaution against contracting Covid-19 appears slated for retraction, Retraction Watch has learned.

The 2020 paper, “Facemasks in the COVID-19 era: A health hypothesis,” was written by Baruch Vainshelboim, who listed his affiliation as Stanford University and the VA Palo Alto Health System. But the study gained wide circulation earlier this month, thanks in part to some conservative politicians, and became the subject of fact-checks by the Associated Press and Snopes, which pointed out that
The paper was published by an exercise physiologist with no academic connection to Stanford University or the NIH in a journal that accepts “radical, speculative and non-mainstream scientific ideas.”

Is that the one that Cnut posted?

Of course. All the right wing web sites descended on the paper like flies to shit, and you know where our member from Yellowknife gets his information from.

Curfew is gone and the terraces are open. Shops are allowed to have more people without any appointment. The puppet dictators have been put back in their boxes.

"The Machine Stops" is a science fiction short story (12,300 words) by E. M. Forster. After initial publication in The Oxford and Cambridge Review (November 1909), the story was republished in Forster's The Eternal Moment and Other Stories in 1928.

[...]

The story describes a world in which most of the human population has lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual now lives in isolation below ground in a standard room, with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Travel is permitted, but is unpopular and rarely necessary. Communication is made via a kind of instant messaging/video conferencing machine with which people conduct their only activity: the sharing of ideas and what passes for knowledge.

The two main characters, Vashti and her son Kuno, live on opposite sides of the world. Vashti is content with her life, which, like most inhabitants of the world, she spends producing and endlessly discussing secondhand 'ideas'.

I read this in high school and it really stuck with me. So well written and prescient. Surprising for the guy that wrote Room With A View.

Just before the pandemic, John Foxx and Benge (aka The Maths) wrote music for a staging of the story in London.

If you truly think that data (both case and death numbers) on the pandemic can't be trusted (whether in India, or generally), there are 3 possibilities:

1. The real figures could be anything at all, and there is no way of knowing whether they're higher or lower - chaos rules...

2. The real figures in most countries are actually much lower, because of deliberate government/medical establishment machinations, for whatever nefarious reason takes your fancy

3. The real figure in most countries are actually much higher, either (most likely) because the infrastructure needed to accurately count is inadequate or that governments are deliberately understating the figures, either to avoid panic or to save their political skins...

I tend to favour #3, while accepting that in modern countries with good medical infrastructure the real figures will be closer to the reported ones than in third world countries.

What about you, Scot?
