Within hours, Jim Hoft, the combative founder and editor of The Gateway Pundit, a conservative media outlet, came across the story. A consortium of researchers working together on an effort called the Election Integrity Partnership (which included my team at the Stanford Internet Observatory) had by this point begun to track false and misleading voting-related information, particularly claims about ballot and mail fraud, as it moved across the social-media ecosystem. Our partnership began 100 days before the election and continued for a few weeks following Election Day. In that time, The Gateway Pundit would become a primary driver in dozens of instances in which false information or misleading narratives went viral. “We report the truth,” a banner on the site noted, as its pages regaled readers with stories of malfunctioning voting machines in Michigan, ballot boxes stuffed into cars, and “miraculous” fake ballots marked for Joe Biden. In our data set tracking the spread of misleading claims, The Gateway Pundit’s stories racked up more than 800,000 retweets on Twitter and at least 4 million views on YouTube over a four-month period.

A few days after the story went viral, Wisconsin elections officials clarified that the discarded mail “did not include any Wisconsin ballots.” (Subsequent local news coverage, from February, noted that seven Minnesota ballots had been turned over to that state.) In fact, the Democrats had not tried to steal the election, but by that point, the facts didn’t matter

Lead Stories found at least two types of mistakes. In some instances, Crowder mistakenly reported on names and addresses that do not match what's in public voter records. In other instances, a county official told Lead Stories, it appears the addresses on file for the voters contain typos or clerical errors.

Whenever a corporation says they are banning something from a morals place, I like to look straight to the rest of the horrible shit they don't ban, and judge their actions by it.

My preference is to take the shortcut. Regardless of whether a ban can be considered the moral thing to do, or if it is consistent with stuff a corporation does not ban, I regard the action as directly or indirectly motivated by safeguarding or enhancing the bottom line.

You don't have to be a stockholder (and I doubt Hermit would be, anyway) to analyse business processes in a dispassionate way. Noting the financial motivations within the capitalist system does not necessarily mean approving that system, no matter what one might think of any given decision.

But a newly surfaced recording – which had been deleted from Ms Watson’s device and was only recovered by officials responding to a freedom-of-information request – has revealed the quotes attributed to Mr Trump, and relayed to media by an anonymous source, were false.

The Washington Post added a lengthy correction to its original story on Monday, admitting that it “misquoted” Mr Trump based on “information provided by a source”.

I would have quoted the source where I heard it originally, but I thought you would believe it if it came from Aussie Media.

I kind of wonder who fell for it, but anyone who did, knows they did lol

The Wall Street Journal first published the newly surfaced audio recording of the six-minute phone call last week.

In the call, Mr Trump repeatedly tells Ms Watson that he won the state and that “something bad happened”. He tells the investigator that she would be “praised” when the “right answer comes out”.

“I can assure you that our team and the (Georgia Bureau of Investigation), that we are only interested in the truth and finding the information that is based on the facts,” she replies.
