Re: All Things Trump: the story continues...
It is obvious that partisan politics played a big part in this whole impeachment saga, and that fear of consequences in the primaries was a significant factor for the Republican senators who voted to acquit.
However, even if a verdict had come from a panel of completely neutral judges, I suspect an acquittal would have been likely, or at least possible, on narrow legal grounds. Trump has clear moral culpability for the incitement, but his words allow a reasonable doubt in terms of direct causation of the Capitol invasion.

Is that just you being certain (as I am) that Trump has clear moral responsibility for the events at the Capitol?
I am considering the strong possibility that an acquittal would have been the result on narrow legalistic grounds...

Acquittal is always possible. You certainly don't actually need "reasonable doubt", the law is perfectly capable of contracting itself --progress often being the contradiction of previously held notions of sound legalistic grounds...

Geez it's a shame they used bullshit evidence, that they were so sloppy with then.JimC wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:10 pmIt is obvious that partisan politics played a big part in this whole impeachment saga, and that fear of consequences in the primaries was a significant factor for the Republican senators who voted to acquit.

I like the part where the Dem rep had to retract his statement, and tried to do so by saying he was accurately quoting an article.
Shouting 'because it was a lie' was great to hear.

He's far from irrelevant. With the Republican's base being his base he's the Republican's king-maker now.

Can someone explain to an unsophisticated African why Trump wasn't subpoenaed to testify to the Senate explaining why he didn't call the National Guard as soon as he knew that the Capitol had been invaded?JimC wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:10 pmIt is obvious that partisan politics played a big part in this whole impeachment saga, and that fear of consequences in the primaries was a significant factor for the Republican senators who voted to acquit.

Er, no. But congressional subpoenas are rather weak.

The lawsuit, filed by Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson in his personal capacity, is the first civil action filed against the former President related to the attack at the US Capitol and comes days after the Senate acquitted Trump in his impeachment trial.
