It is research (on viruses) about them gaining functions. Such as transmissability, or the ability to jump across a species barrier.

Gain of function research, banned by some presidents and allowed by others recently (I can't remember if Obama banned it and Trump allowed it, or vice-versa)

It's really quite simple.

The stuff the Weinstein was pointing out about it, was who was doing that research, where it was being done. How the governmental organizations have responded to questions about some of their funding of that research etc.

No, I was referring to a kind of research I learned about, while listening to a couple of biologists talk about virology, research and the 'rona.

The talk about gain of function research and how it affected Weinsteins lab leak hypothesis is a pretty interesting subject.

The point is that the lab in Wuhan was doing gain of function research on bat corona viruses, so that it would be expected that things like the SARS-COV-2 virus are present in that lab.

Still, a myriad of experts who looked at the virus in detail say it is very unlikely the virus was the result of experiments in a lab. Those two guys in the podcast are both no specific experts on the question and in a minority position among experts, so I will go with the mainstream position.
