US President Joe Biden has used the anniversary of the Parkland school shooting massacre to call on Congress to strengthen gun laws, including by requiring background checks on all gun sales and banning assault weapons.

Mr Biden joined the Parkland, Florida, community in remembering the 17 people killed three years ago in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

In a statement released by the White House, Mr Biden also called for Congress to outlaw high-capacity magazines and make gun manufacturers liable for the role their products played in violence.

Mr Biden said his administration would not wait for the next mass shooting to take action against "our epidemic of gun violence".

"We owe it to all those we've lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now," Mr Biden's said.

Mr Biden said Americans mourned with the families of Parkland victims, as well as "all those who have lost loved ones to gun violence".
One thing that you can absolutely guarantee is that gun stores will be swamped by people Laklak stocking up on assault rifles and ammo just in case the measures get passed. Gun store owners and gun manufacturers must be rubbing their hands with glee...

Manufacturers will have to ramp up their production, then. Can't have Bubba and Jethro getting low on ammo...
Bubba and Jethro can rest assured. Ammo production has been ramped up to meet increased demand, so they can stop sending hate mail to the ammo factory owners already.

Should people have a higher ID requirement to buy a gun? Or to vote?
Let's see now. In 2019 15,000 people were killed by guns in the USA, and another 25,000 used them to commit suicides. No data available yet on the numbers in 2020, but there is no reason to believe they will be much different. I looked, but could not find any information on how many people killed others or themselves in 2020 using votes.
How about those who vote for political parties or candidates that support:

* capital punishment
* maintaining a health system that selectively kills poor people
* allowing any nutter to buy guns
* incompetent handling of the covid epidemic (killing thousands)

Votes can kill, alright...

Indubitably.

Do you think a higher ID requirement will decrease the chances of votes going to parties that support capital punishment etc?

:irony:

OK, then. Since you pretend you can't see the answer in my previous post:
People should have a higher ID requirement to buy a gun.
People should not have a higher ID requirement to vote.

I gave you one reason for my reply above. There are more.

There is simply no way to tell, as far as I can see.

How about a higher IQ requirement? :Jack:

Well, the way the various states go about it the more than 100 proposed new ID laws are sure to statistically skew the qualifying voters towards the Republican side.

You do realise that the results of IQ tests disadvantage the lower classes, don't you? May as well bring property prerequisites in. Wealth is regarded by many as an indicator of higher IQs.

Why would you think requiring ID would skew that way?

I was not talking about requiring IDs as such. Read my reply.

Well, there are pretty solid ways of affirming ID. It should be at least as challenging as getting a gun permit. Only a nut-case would be against properly identifying voters.

Or someone who wanted to gerrymander with forms of id, designed to exclude those who can't meet certain qualifications. Much simpler to just have good simple ID. Like the modern world, I mean.

On average, those able to deal with the bureaucratic processes to gain ID of any sort are white, property owning and not poor.

Insistence on voter ID can become a de facto method of disenfranchising the poor and non-white citizens, or at least a higher proportion of them on a comparative basis......

That is the accepted line. I'm not sure it's true though, since it seems to presume a lot about the poor and non-white. Such as the arrogant suggestion that they are going to be Dem voters.

Being opposed to ID seems to be exclusively for voting. It's ok to demand it to drive, get health care or go to the city pool or gym. I don't know anyone who is opposed to requiring ID for any other reason, than wanting to support the American Democratic party accepted line about voter ID.

(I don't know, but I bet you have to identify yourself in your country, to vote)
