I must admit I don't get this issue. Google just links to news content, not display it. So they are responsible for traffic to the news sites. If Google et al wasn't linking their sites, these news organisations would get much less traffic.

The same discussion was going on in Germany a few years ago and then on the European Union level. The result is that that there is a law as is planned in Australia but the fact is that all the news sites sign a waiver that allows Google to index their sites for free. Those that don't sign the waiver are just not listed anymore...Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 6:43 amGoogle threatens to shut down its search engines in Australia if the proposed digital news code goes ahead.

Damn. Now I regret having ditched my 1961 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Had the annual supplementary volumes right up to 1988 too!Brian Peacock wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 6:43 amGoogle threatens to shut down its search engines in Australia if the proposed digital news code goes ahead.

I had the similar in Finnish. It went to paper recycling in the spring. But I still have a huge Readers Digest atlas from the 60s. There is no such atlas published anymore, not even the UK fancy atlases, Oxford etc, had the detail it has. It has the cities and rivers in the right place, so I saved it. Plus it's one of the few things left from my dad, aside from a pocket knife and a crescent wrench (spanner) from Sweden.Hermit wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:14 amDamn. So toss a bunch of robots into a crater, have them crawl around laying out the screen, positioned such that luna blocks the noise from earth, and it gives a high-res listen to some boring incomprehensible 'signals'.

I get it. You don't get 'radiotelescope made from a crater on the dark side of the moon' from that? You can find it on Nasa, but I couldn't be bothered postinpErvinalia wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 8:51 amYou don't seem to get this thread, do you?Cunt wrote:So toss a bunch of robots into a crater, have them crawl around laying out the screen, positioned such that luna blocks the noise from earth, and it gives a high-res listen to some boring incomprehensible 'signals'.

Now that you point it out, yes. But not before with just a random collection of words.
