Doesn't strike me as a particularly effective defence, given they're charged with conspiracy, which is basically big talk about carrying out a crime. The claim that they didn't intend to actually carry out their plan is all very well, but unless there's any evidence to support the claim it's worthless. If these fine upstanding wannabe terrorists were all just big talk, it's unlikely there is any such evidence, because big talkers aren't known for expressing reservations about their plans in the midst of the planning. Nor did they lack the means to carry out their plan.

They can hope for a sympathetic Trumpist judge though. Mitch McConnell has ensured there's a possibility of that.
