Phases 1: Give the vaccine to a very small number of people with different doses and regimes (Only once or multiple times) to see which doses and regimes give the best immune reaction (By looking at antibodies) and to see whether there are any severe immediate side-effects.

Phase 2: Repeat phase 1 based on the outcomes from phase 1 but with a lot more people using the best looking dosis and regime variants from phase 1. At the end of phase 2, we select one final dose and regime recommendation.

Phase 3: Innoculate a whole lot (tens of thousands) of people that live in an area with community spread with the selected dose and regime (Half of them gets a placebo).

Whenver one of the probands has some health problems, look at whether this could be a side-effect of the vaccination. If there are severe side-effects, the study would have to be aborted. Hasn't happened so far.

Whenever one of the probands gets tested positively for Covid (most likely because of developing symptoms) a counter is increased. Afer the counter is high enough, you look in your secret notes to see which of these people that got Covid were vaccinated and which got the placebo.

This is where we are currently. They looked and they saw that more than 90% of the infected probands got the places and only a few got the real vaccine. This means that the vaccine is at least able to prevent symptomatic infections to more than 90%.

Phase 3 is going to be continued for some time. At the end, all probands are tested for anti-bodies and t-cells to see whether they developed an immune reaction and whether they had an infection without symptoms and from that you can also see whether they were infectious or not.

A total of more than 100 different vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 are under development. A small number of them have reached the stage of development that the vaccines can be tested in humans (clinical trials). This type of clinical research is structured in three phases. The phases must all be completed properly, but they can take place at the same time – especially if a vaccine is needed quickly, as is the case with the novel coronavirus.

Three phases of clinical research:

Phase I: The vaccine is given to healthy volunteers to see whether it is safe and what dosage (quantity) is most effective.
Phase II: The vaccine is given to target groups that would be vaccinated to see what dosage (quantity) is most effective and how well the immune system responds to it.
Phase III: The vaccine is given to an even larger group, consisting of thousands of people, to see how well the vaccine works to prevent COVID-19. People who do receive the vaccine are then compared with people who did not receive the vaccine.

Only when all phases have been successfully completed can the vaccine be approved for market launch. Then it can be used in general practitioners' practices or vaccination centres.

Oh well thanks. There is talk of starting in December. I should be in the first group. Seems odd though I would have though that the spreaders of the virus would be first ie. the young people. (Brain is having a Dutch day) But medical ethics requires those that are at greatest risk of dying have precedence.

What bothers me is how long the paranoia will last. I can see some wearing masks permanently. It is going to affect socialising that's for sure.

I now know two people in town who have parents with Covid. Still do not know one directly, though I have met one of these "old" people (she is my age ) once. The other one is 80 plus, and was at the same assisted living as my mother in law, before being hospitalized. I have not seen her since march.
