I want to believe our leaders --in the US-- are just psychopaths, because then we might hope to one day replace them with regular folk. The alternative is that they aren't purposely manipulating us with a callous disregard for the harm it's doing, but in fact just believe, like Trump, that the election has been stolen, the pandemic is a hoax, Russian interference never happened, climate change can't be real because God runs the planet, and the market cures all ills...

Conspiracy myths are always merging with each other. Since those myths are already internally inconsistent, the additional inconsistencies when merging them don't matter.

People telling you that viruses actually don't exist and are in invention by Big Pharma are at the same time telling you that the Coronavirus is not worse than the Influenza virus.
People telling you that Angela Merkel is evil because she is the daughter of Adolf Hitler are at the same time telling you Adolf Hitler was a very nice guy and all the bad stuff about him isn't true.
