They can promise what they like before trade negotiations are started. I'd rather hear them say that giving US medical firms access to the NHS is categorically off the table - but alas, those private concerns already have their claws into the health and social care provision here.

Well Johnson has big problems. With Trump out and Biden's hate of Brexit. No trade deal. He is fucked.

Trump's offer of a 'great deal' with the UK was never going to materialise or remake Britain anew.

That was exactly the problem. Johnson wanted it at all cost. The plans for the 51st state are now gone. The EU must be taking a big breathe. Trump will become the Farage of America. Brexit may even collapse.

I don't think the Tories' objective was a free trade deal with the US. That was just a story that became convenient. There's no plan other than power.

Oh Brian. Johnson will always free trade with America; who else? The 51st state under Trump? A doddle. It is not the tories but the 1%. Now he is fucked as his last lifeboat is sinking.

He's from a class who fundamentally resent being told they can't do exactly what they want. All those Eton boys are anarchists at heart.

Which is why I think ultimately we'll end up looking to Europe.

Maybe in 20 years time, but in the medium term to secure trade in a Norwegian-style arrangement because we're about to be hit with the double-whammy of the economic shock of Brexit on top of a post-Covid economy.

Optimistic Brian. The EU has always a long memory and the damage Johnson and his cronies have done wont be forgotten. With the exit of Trump the UK is out on its own raft.
