Sanders wanted to do a little bit of health socialism and a modest amount of redistribution, and the Democrats still elbowed him out, preferring to risk losing with Biden rather than possibly winning with Bernie. The idea that he's a right-winger by anyone's measure is taking it a bit far though - about as ridiculous as claiming that a political party can be both Christian and democratic.

I basically agree, but I would differ to the extent that I don't believe Sanders could have won - too many Americans would have seen him as a bridge too far...

I think you're right. Bernie got 40% of the Democrat primary vote, which was pressure enough for Biden to pick a more progressive running mate. Even though the establishment Dems are pretty conservative and set in their ways they also really need that younger, progressiver vote. With the changing demographics of the US that group of 18-35 voters are going to be the mainstream of the party in then next 10 years. Bernie created a space for those kinds of progressive ideas and conversations to take place. I don't think his time was wasted in 2016 or this year even if he didn't get the nomination.

I saw an interview with a woman on television just now. She said she was a democrat but would vote for trump because if Harris follows Biden as president because he's old, there will be two "females" ruling the country. And although she's a "female" herself, this would be too much for her...

I have to wonder if Bernie could have won if we had preferential voting. He and his policies are very popular but the media spent the whole primary asking "can a :panic: socialist :panic: win in America?" NO ONE is enthusiastic about Biden. He's the "safe" option...

You might be right about his chances under a different voting system, but I stand by my view that (unfortunately) he had no chance in your current system, and the Democrat bean-counters knew that...

Queensland female opposition leader, having been defeated in the state election a few days ago has resigned as party leader, before the knives in the back got started...

Oh, sure, I wasn't disagreeing with you. Just expressing frustration with our terrible election system that incentivises tactical voting... :sigh:

There are two more reasons to love Australia's fluffiest aeronautical marsupials after the discovery that there are actually three species of greater glider, not one as previously assumed.
