Not looking good in the UK and France - over 26 thousand new cases each, 190 new deaths in the UK and 160 odd in France...

Second wave is more like a tsunami...

This is evidence that we are fucked as a species. We can't even do what's needed for a short time, let alone do what's needed to address global warming.

I think that it's broader than capitalism, Brian. Our species mindset finds it very difficult to take long-term consequences seriously. It wasn't necessary during the millions of years we evolved in small tribal groups. Our overlay of rational thought cannot fully alter aspects of our core nature...

We're fucking monkeys. We've had a better run than most monkeys get, so no point in crying over spilled, weaponized viruses. The cockroaches and small rodentey things will thank us in the long run.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

However, I agree that capitalism happily runs with the "take the money and stuff the future" meme...

We're capable of better, but don't show much indication of that right now.

Capitalism needn't be a mindless headlong grab for ever larger profits, damn the consequences, though it seems to inevitably gravitate toward that. I would agree that going by its record, unhindered capitalism will happily despoil and poison the planet. That's not to say that socialism has a significantly better record.

I agree, and I only say that because it's the structures and system of social relations we've allowed Capitalists to build across the face of our societies which are grinding the environment down to the bone - and with that our species' and the planet's capacity for self-regulate. Capitalism owns the regulatory framework and we only get to interface with it under a licence with strictly enforced terms and conditions.

Interesting to see how effective facemasks are not.

Global report: record Covid cases and new lockdowns across Europe
Parts of Spain and Italy facing restrictions as Ireland set to become first EU country to reimpose national lockdown
Facemasks are still not compulsory thanks to the sanity of our constitution.

How do you know the face mask aren't making the situation better than it otherwise would have been? Where's your non-fairy data?

Where's the double-blind tests (other than looking at those regions where masks are in high-uptake against those where they're not)? Not to mention there's only a single reference to masks in the article - Poland's legislators decided not to make the wearing of masks mandatory.

Look at all the countries where there have been huge increases; Belgium, Spain, France and Germany. They all have mandatory mask wearing. It has not helped. Where is the data to prove it has helped. There is none on either side. They are made mandatory under the motto 'just in case' but the way they are being used has more chance of increasing the infection. Who uses them according to the WHO advice? No one.
I dont have to prove a negative and there is still no positive evidence.
