Sure, crowded indoor spaces are ideal for transmission. Here, at least, there are strict guidelines as to how many people at a time are allowed to be in a particular area - from what I've seen, it works well, there is no overcrowding in supermarkets etc. And yes, masks would not make you perfectly safe; they simply act on the probability of transmission, so widespread mask wearing in shops or public transport is a useful additional tool on top of hygiene and sensible social distancing. Masks are a little absurd when walking outdoors with few if any people around...

Rather a poor record of quarantine and keeping workers from bringing in the virus. One home tried to house the nurses in trailers in 2 week terms, then time off, did not help.

But the city's got a radioactive problem. Grand Island draws water from a well field along the Platte River. Buildings house pumps that bring water into town. There are 21 pumps in all. But groundwater there contains uranium.

Luchsinger said, "It's a naturally occurring substance from the mountains."

If there's a health threat, it's from a lifetime of drinking the water. Grand Island falls within safe limits, but the levels are rising. So that explains the need for the treatment plan under construction.

Dominic Cummings’ lockdown travels and the exams fiasco could have contributed to dooming the government’s Covid contact-tracing app before it even launches, a technology expert has warned.

Evidence of low uptake overseas also suggests the app may not live up to ministers’ early hopes of a panacea. In late May, the health secretary, Matt Hancock, admitted it was “the cherry on the cake but [not] the cake”; in recent weeks it has barely been mentioned.

The app, which is due to launch in England and Wales on Thursday 24 September, will use the bluetooth signal in mobile phones to track close and sustained contact between users and then warn those who may have been exposed to an infectious person that they should self-isolate.

Under cover of coronavirus, the Tory government is bulldozing basic liberties

The Tories have been increasing police powers, bringing in laws by diktat and sowing mistrust. When will the left speak up?

Towards the end of last week, someone I know posted a video and photograph on social media, taken one balmy afternoon on Hampstead Heath in north London. They showed a group of young people – who, by the look of them, had spent the day together at school or college. The images also featured three police officers, dispatched to disperse the gathering. In response, everyone had tried in vain to retreat into groups of six. “In the end they give up and all leave together,” ran the accompanying text. And that was that: a small, faintly absurd incident that highlighted the strange times in which we now live.

The underlying logic of England’s so-called rule of six is, I suppose, clear enough. But the sheer complexity of apparently simple regulations – not to mention the fact that they exempt grouse-shooting parties – shows something is clearly wrong. Given that schools are back, people are being encouraged to return to work and visiting restaurants and pubs is still held to be some kind of moral duty, the effectiveness of the new rule is obviously open to question.

And then there is the biggest issue of all: the fact that breaking the rule is a criminal offence. As the Hampstead incident suggests, some police officers are evidently seizing their chance to indulge in the kind of neurotic, unnecessary behaviour that first reared its head at the start of lockdown.As part of a quest for “stronger enforcement of the rules”, Boris Johnson has proposed local “Covid marshals” who will ensure any miscreants do as they are told. Now, there are to be fines of up to £10,000 for people judged to have breached self-isolation rules, and the police will be checking compliance in the “highest incidence areas” and “high-risk groups”, based on “local intelligence”.
