A major theme of both his address and the night as a whole will be support for law enforcement. The theme of the night contrasts sharply with National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball teams announcing they will not play in their Wednesday night games to protest police violence against Black people.

Trump is scheduled to address an audience on the South Lawn of the White House, and he tweeted earlier Thursday that his administration was "fully engaged" with officials in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

But taken as a whole, the imagery of Thursday night's speech, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over the Washington monument, and the Republican National Convention was a fitting explanation of why Trump is so attractive to millions of Americans who flock to his cultural warfare and embrace his disruptive personality.
