Medical schools face admissions chaos after A-level climbdown

Universities receive flood of angry calls as would-be doctors struggle to secure places

Would-be doctors hoping to study medicine are struggling to secure places at oversubscribed medical schools after the climbdown on A-levels in England threw offers into disarray.

Universities say they have been bombarded with calls from angry families, some threatening legal action, if a place is not made available for their child.

Many students planning a career in medicine lost their places after results were downgraded by the government’s standardisation algorithm. Now, armed with the improved grades, some are too late to get into their school of choice as numbers are limited and expensive for institutions, and spaces have been filled.

Reluctant to turn away would-be doctors during the ongoing Covid pandemic, the Department for Education (DfE) came up with a series of proposals to try to remedy the situation – but most were rejected as impractical by universities.

With Brexit, the UK will need to re-establish a lower class that will do the cleaning, physical labour, rubbish removal and wiping old people's bums.

Firm linked to Gove and Cummings hired to work with Ofqual on A-levels

Exclusive: Public First was given communications contract without competitive tender

A company run by long–term associates of Michael Gove and Dominic Cummings has been working behind the scenes with the exams agency Ofqual on its disastrous strategy for determining A-level results, the Guardian can reveal.

Public First, a policy and research firm owned by James Frayne and Rachel Wolf, who both formerly worked for Gove, has been involved on the project with Ofqual since June after being granted a contract that was not put out to competitive tender.

Details of the contract have not been made public and Ofqual declined to say how much public money had been spent hiring Public First.

Time-wasting UK makes post-Brexit deal unlikely, says EU chief

Michel Barnier says talks often go backwards not forwards as UK fails to grasp EU red lines

Michel Barnier has accused the British government of “wasting valuable time” and making “unlikely” a post-Brexit deal between the EU and the UK.

With barely two months to go until the EU-imposed deadline of late October for a deal, the EU’s chief negotiator said: “Frankly I am disappointed and I am worried.” Barnier added he was “a little surprised” because Boris Johnson had told EU leaders earlier this summer he wanted progress by July.

After two days of talks with the British, Barnier said: “Too often this week it felt as if we were going backwards more than forwards.” At this stage an agreement seemed “unlikely”, he said. “I simply do not understand why we are wasting valuable time.”

His opposite number David Frost struck a more hopeful note, while acknowledging there had been “little progress”.
