When did reducing the risk of infection become a culture wars issue? Are these people going to be demanding that those 'librul surgeons' stop wearing them or that those 'far-leftist nurses' should stop washing their hands?

When Republicans made science a culture war issue, they made EVERYTHING a culture war issue, because science is how we understand the universe.

That's fair enough I guess. But how would they deal with the plethora of contradictions that would throw up? I guess the question is, why did they decide to have this battle over masks when the virus infects and kills libruls as easily as conservatives?

They've created an alternate reality. Fox News, Breitbart, Infowars, "alternative facts", "truth isn't truth". They lie. A lot. See how Trump and some Republican governors are suppressing covid data.

The opposition to libruls is automatic. They've been trained for decades to oppose anything that even remotely resembles left-leaning politics, and since people left of center tend to accept science, our conservatives always end up on the wrong side of science. In order to maintain a worldview that says that America is great because of whiteness and Christianity, you have no choice but to reject science because science lays waste to crazy racial and religious beliefs.

ETA: Actually, they even automatically oppose conservative policies when enacted by the Dems (which they hilariously consider to be a radical, far left-wing party). Obamacare was a straight up Republican style system based on Romneycare and Heritage Foundation ideas, and the Republicans rejected it as "socialism". The GOP really has nothing left but white nationalism, Christian fundamentalism, and unwavering opposition to any progress whatsoever.

Covid-19= sniffles

President Trump downplayed the danger of the coronavirus, claiming in an interview that aired Sunday that many cases are simply people who "have the sniffles."

"Many of those cases are young people that would heal in a day," Trump said in his interview with Fox News Sunday. "They have the sniffles, and we put it down as a test." He added that many of those sick "are going to get better very quickly."

Bolsanaro called it the "little flu", so I guess that the child's version, the "sniffles" is a good fit for Trump...

Australia is being hit by a second wave of infections. The seven day rolling average of new infections has risen from 5 in mid-June to 269 a couple of days ago. Deaths are on the rise too. There were none between May 29 and June 25. Since then we had 16, all of them in Victoria where almost all the of the recent infections occurred.

Still, we are better off than other regions. More people are dying daily in Florida now than have died in Australia since the epidemic began. The population of Florida is 21.5 million. Australia's is 25 million. I am pretty sure that libertarianism is only one of many factors that make for different outcomes, but it is one of them. So much winning for individual freedom.

I'd be OK with that, except for the fact that deaths will not be restricted to those who refuse to wear masks.
