Australian Race Issues

Post by JimC » Fri Jun 12, 2020 11:43 pm

When the protests in the US over George Floyd erupted, Australian protests were also planned. They were partly in international support of the BLM movement in the US, but also strongly about the plight of Australian indigenous people, particularly in terms of black deaths in custody, but also about general treatment of black people by police and other authorities, and the major health and poverty issues they experience. Here are a few news reports which relate to these issues:

Last year I linked to a short article about deaths in custody. It reported:
Of the 2,608 people who have died in custody since 1979–80, 500 were Indigenous and 2,104 were of non-Indigenous background.
Keeping in mind the small percentage of Australians that are Aborigines, the imbalance is palpable. Then there are the reasons given for deaths among Aboriginies, like that of a woman who was taken into protective custody and committed suicide by banging her head against the cell wall. Really? The coroner accepted this explanation at the inquest.

Then there is the much lower life expectancy of Aborigines, and the much higher unemployment rate.

Has anyone seen the arrest of a cheeky Aboriginal youth in Sydney last week?

Top Aboriginal sporting figures also cop a lot of shit on account of their ethnicity. When a 13 year old called Adam Goodes an ape and threw a banana peel at him, that was only the start of an enduring harassment campaign targeted at him. How dare the blackfella object to that incident?

In the press conference that followed the police commissioner stressed repeatedly that he cannot possibly comment until a thorough investigation of the matter had taken its course, but the next day he did comment. He told radio station 2GB that the officer, who has been placed on restricted duties, "could have handled the situation differently ... Not for one minute am I saying the officer's actions were correct ... The fact that this officer doesn't have a chequered history and he has been in [the police force] for three and a half years, if the complaint is sustained against him, you would have to say he has had a bad day." I doubt the commissioner would have reacted that way, had the boy been a Caucasian whose parents raised him in one of the more genteel 'burbs of the city.

The Cronulla riots illustrate that our racists do not limit their bigotry to Aborigines. Not much has changed since then.

I think he was suspended. But apparently that's a technique that they are trained to do.

Yeah, it's a good technique if you're wrestling a non-compliant drunk at chucking out time, but to do it to a kid that clearly isn't resisting, and then for the other officer to knee on his ankle while he's down and stunned, appear to have been done only to hurt him and cause distress. The fact that the plod knew they were being videoed but did it anyway suggests that they feel they can act violently towards lippy teens without consequences.

An interesting article about a survey examining unconscious racism in Oz:

Are you entering your Tero phase? If only you had a smartphone you could take pictures of a few sentences.

Done the test. Next time our member from Yellowkniffie claims that people who accuse others of racism are themselves racist I shall say that Donald Trump has proven himself to be a racist, then refer said member to what my test suggests.
Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between White Australians and Aboriginal Australians.
The possible outcomes were:
The interpretation is described as 'automatic preference for White Australians' if you responded faster when White Australian faces and Good words were classified with the same key than when Aboriginal Australian faces and Good words were classified with the same key. Depending on the magnitude of your result, your automatic preference may be described as 'slight', 'moderate', 'strong', or 'little to no preference'. Alternatively, you may have received the following feedback: There were too many errors to determine a result.
I've done the US version of this IAT not quite three years ago. It gave me the same result. Apparently I belong to the 17% with little to no automatic preference between White people and Black people.

Um, are you suggesting that no socialists are racist and/or that all libertarians and other fuckwits are?
