Our mayor talks about the children (yeah)

there is a paywallGaylor Baird responded:
“In that moment in time, with two nights of massive violence and destruction, fires burning in buildings, glass broken, people getting hurt, I had to make a quick decision. Over 40 mayors imposed curfews. This is a tool. This is a tool for controlling crowd sizes, and that was the thinking.
“And, you know, I came to that, with the lens of being someone who follows the rules and is rewarded for following the rules and that's not necessarily the experience of everyone in America. And for peaceful protesters. Being in harm's way was a sacrifice they're willing to make.”
Recognizing the tension and turmoil created by the Sunday curfew, the city changed its strategy regarding the protests, curfews and going forward, she said.
“You hope everyone feels the positive results that have come from the way that we have adapted our strategies,” she said.
Gaylor Baird urged people to watch the livestreams of the rallies and to listen to the participants. She acknowledged the leadership of the young people, who have called consistently for peace despite the rage they feel justifiably at what is often unequal treatment.
“That is what the video of George Floyd's callous and brutal killing demonstrated to so many in a way that maybe they hadn't been able to see before. The kids in our community, and adults as well and people across our country just want to be recognized as human beings, and have the full potential to flourish, that any of us want for ourselves or our children.”

How easy is it to get rid of a bad union cop? Probably too hard.Unions are the problem... because the cops will act in union to protect bad cops.

Re: George Floyd protests
I've seen a lot of chatter about the 3rd recently, usually with the implication that the D.C. mayor invoked it to resist tyranny or something, but it had nothing to do with what happened. The mayor didn't kick the guard out of a private business (she has absolutely no power to do that), she simply refused to pay for the rooms out of the city budget and found them alternative housing at the Federal government's expense. Here's the text of the 3rd:Animavore wrote: ↑Mon Jun 08, 2020 6:01 amThere's more than 2 amendments?

So they subcontracted their police force to the county sheriff and actually increased the number of officers on the streets. I do like the rules about use of force, and it seems to have helped, but this isn't anything like disbanding or defunding the police force.
I do NOT trust the vast majority of smooth-brained ground apes enough to not have an armed presence between them and me. In the final extremity that armed force will be me, but I'd prefer someone else do it.

The statement seems reasonable when a part of the population cannot do it because they have to fear getting into trouble when calling the police instead of getting help

Their non-police solution sounds a lot like pay gangs protection money to stay safe

Re: George Floyd protests
I've never had anything to do with the police, other than these:
Case 1
In 1971 my mom was on a trip and my dad had a kidney stone. I called 911. The cop took him to the local hospital. I bicycled there to find it had not passed, so they kept him overnight. He took a cab home.
2 In college I jaywalked in Ohio. The cop was going to give me ticket. Then he had a bright idea to drive me to the county line. "I live here. I go to OSU." I showed him my ID. He said "go home, hippie." He never gave me the ticket.

Re: George Floyd protests
Got pulled over maybe 10 years ago, taillight was out. Had a nice chat and no ticket. Mrs. Lak got a ticket on I-75 for 84 in a 70. Cop said about three words and gave her a $145 ticket.
Back in the day I had my run ins. Have seen the inside of county, got a bologna sandwich and a blanket.
I've got several years of cop stickers on the window, Florida Sheriff's Association and Police Benevolent. Costs about $90 a year. It's not supposed to help you out, but I don't think it hurts.

Oh tickets, yeah, and once we gotpulled Over as potential purse snatchers. We left a bowling alley and the robbed woman called the cops. We were the only car leaving. The purse was found, she left it in the toilet. I spent some 20 minutes in handcuffs. My wife was not cuffed.
Another time I was a witness on a cop that caused a crash. He chased a speeder, pulling out without warning.
