Leadership.
Donald Trump's press conference on coronavirus testing ended abruptly after a terse exchange with with two female reporters. Asked by CBS's Weijia Jiang about his focus on international comparisons rather than US deaths, Trump snapped: 'Don’t ask me, ask China that question' After being asked by Jiang, who is Asian-American, why he had directed the remark at her, Trump cut off the CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins as she asked a question and walked away from the podium

Clearly the Enemies of the People are colluding with China. Many people are saying they should be investigated.

Yes Brian, I do, given there have been ~400 deaths in that state with 230 black and 176 white out of a population of ~3 million, I do think they'd open it up had it been 230 white and 176 black instead.
I was thinking a bit more about this.

According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of Mississippi was: White: 58.59%, Black or African American: 37.67%, Two or more races: 1.34%.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/state ... opulation/
[/quote]
Which suggests that Black communities have seen c.56% of the deaths while accounting for only c.38% of the population. I don't know exactly what this tells us but it shows that Covid-19 isn't an equal opportunity virus in Mississippi.

The CDC offers several possible explanations for the figures. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... ities.html

My problem is with the leap from this to the reason for our failure to respond to this virus appropriately being racism. It is possible, and I think very likely, that the best explanation for our failure will not ultimately be racism.

What your figure probably suggests to you is that if more whites were dying then they'd be inclined to care more about it. But the figure doesn't actually do that for the reason you first understood when you first read it, it is simply not enough people of any color for many to take it seriously regardless of who is doing the dying.

We aren't good at taking threats seriously, and even if we do we make mistakes.

Yeah, you're probably right. I think the 'us and them' stuff is probably more influential along class lines rather than race, but we've read reports for years about how Republicans have been attempting to systematically disenfranchising Black and ethnic minority Americans, incarcerating them at higher rates, shooting them in their cars for looking at cops the wrong way etc etc ...

Will the "kill the voters" strategy help Trump?
CNN
There's a Covid-19 rebellion brewing in Pennsylvania, where counties led by Republicans and some businesses have said they'll defy Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf's restrictive orders.

Wolf has said he'll withhold stimulus funding from those counties if they ignore his orders. He's taken a tiered strategy to reopening the state and moved scores of counties to a new, more open "yellow" phase. Some of those still on "red" don't want to wait for the state anymore.
President Donald Trump, naturally, cheered on the counties on Twitter on Monday, and accused Democrats of trying to slow-walk the opening to hurt him in November.
