I question the accuracy of the headline below. From the description it sounds as if despite statements made to her by police, the woman was never actually put under arrest, but was 'detained for questioning' or some similar euphemism for taking somebody into police custody without a legal arrest being made.

'“COVID-19 Has Been Racialized”: Black Scholar Jill Nelson Arrested for Chalking “Trump = Plague”'
I went out to go to the drugstore and the supermarket, essential trips. I was walking from the drugstore down to Broadway to go to the supermarket, when I saw a green boarded-up, empty, for-rent building. It was covered with plywood. And I wrote — had a piece of chalk in my pocket, and I wrote “Trump = Plague.”

Before I could even step back, cops swooped in, cut me off on — made an L, two cop cars — cut me off, jumped out. “What are you doing? What are you doing? You’re under arrest.” They searched me, asked me if I had weapons, told me to take my hands out of my pockets — it was a cold day, so I said no — frisked me, shoved me into a police car and took me to the 33rd Precinct, where they put me in a cell and left me there for five-and-a-half hours. I took my shoes off. I had had a mask, a fabric mask I had made, on, but I demanded that they give me one of their more professional masks. They didn’t allow me to make any phone calls. I was never read my rights.

Of course it's been 'racialised' - you don't think the governor of Mississippi would have eased lockdown restrictions the day after the state posted the highest daily death count if it had been mostly white folks dying?

Yes Brian, I do, given there have been ~400 deaths in that state with 230 black and 176 white out of a population of ~3 million, I do think they'd open it up had it been 230 white and 176 black instead.

--//--

It's a rare exception in my experience that the police don't behave like loons when they've caught someone in the act. It's always, "on the ground" --"cocksucker"! It's rarely, "would you mind getting on the ground" --"please"

I've spent years making her case. She won't get anywhere. People will note that she was breaking the law. It also doesn't help that she thinks her treatment was exceptional, it comes across as privileged.

Everyone who has had any real interactions with the police in this country has a story like it, or several.

Yeah, I might over-egged myself there - a bit. But there's definitely a class dimension to this, which I think feed into/back on a racial dimension. Am I right in thinking these figures are hospital deaths from confirmed cases? I wonder how many people didn't/won't/can't seek medical advice/treatment due to fears about the cost(?).

However, I note from my daily reading that from today anyone on Medicaid will not be issued with copayer charges for Covid-19 diagnosis, treatments or prescriptions, backdated to Mar 1.

Do infections and deaths 'at home' get counted that way when it is an elder in a care home?

I mean is there a distinction between bureaucrat-run facilities and occupant-run houses...

I don't think it works like that Cunt. Either you think racism is a bad thing or not, rather than thinking only a certain level of racism is a bad thing and anything below that is acceptable, tolerable, ignorable etc.

A fact sheet released today by the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) shows that, contrary to some common stereotypes about America’s poor, at least one-third of the 13 million children living in poverty are white.

“Poverty affects children of all colors, contrary to stereotypes. The notion held by many Americans that poverty is not a white problem is simply false,” says Jane Knitzer, EdD, director of NCCP, a research center at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. “The sooner all Americans realize these facts about poverty, the better chance we have of eradicating it.”

The NCCP fact sheet shows that among America’s poor children, 4.2 million are white, 4 million are Latino, 3.6 million are African American, 400,000 are Asian, and 200,000 are American Indian.
--//--
While the figures indicate that indeed more white children are poor, they also show, however, that higher percentages of minorities live in poor families:

I'll let those who are so inclined argue that this is important to the millions of people in poverty regardless of race.

Racism isn't logical, Sean. Most racists don't even know that they're racists. To a racist society, perception matters more than data. A drug epidemic will be treated very differently depending on whether the drug is perceived as a black drug or a white drug.

Bullshit, there you are acting like racism is some environment that can account for all of an area's features again. It's not and it can't. Your view is a blinkered view that apparently ignores the data, whatever it is, in order to cling to its mistaken idea of how the world works.

Trump is a narcissist. He very likely feared taking any action in large part because taking the initiative, rather than constantly reacting, leaves him more vulnerable to criticism. How silly would he look if he took action and it turned out to be nothing? He would also be more inclined to gamble than more empathetic people regardless of the lives he gambled with. He doesn't understand science, and he would be more likely to dismiss experts in the same way that other science deniers do.

The list of Trump's failures goes on and on, and those that aren't linked to his narcissism will exist in even more people around him, in people within governments that share his views, and within the public in general.

Is racism one of those faults? --absofuckinglutely. Is it the explanation you're looking for, I very much doubt it.

If you convince everyone it is, will the Republicans wander the desert for the next 40 years? --maybe

I think using the word "all" is a misrepresentation of Seabass's views. Surely the clear and obvious racism of at least some white conservatives, and the structural disadvantages within US society which are clearly racially biased are part of the social environment, and therefore part of any valid analysis of issues such as a response to a pandemic. Perhaps Seabass gives more prominence to that factor than it objectively requires, but you seem to swing the pendulum hard in the opposite direction.

All, in this case, refers to any feature rather than either every feature literally, or the entirety of any feature; just that all features are susceptible to being explained through racism.
