Plant shutdowns are leaving Americans dangerously close to seeing meat shortages at grocery stores. Meanwhile, farmers are facing the likely culling of millions of animals and mass burial graves could soon be dug across the heartland.
"The food supply chain is breaking," said John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods, the biggest US meat company.
Outbreaks are forcing the closure of some of the country's biggest slaughterhouses, where tens of thousands of animals are processed daily. As the plants shutter, producers are left with nowhere to sell their livestock. It's forcing farmers to make gut-wrenching decisions to dispose of their animals. The situation is so severe that the US government is setting up a centre partly to assist on "depopulation and disposal methods".
"Millions of pounds of meat will disappear" as plants close, Tyson said in a blog post on the company's website. "In addition to meat shortages, this is a serious food waste issue. Farmers across the nation simply will not have anywhere to sell their livestock to be processed, when they could have fed the nation. Millions of animals - chickens, pigs and cattle - will be depopulated."

Given that one in three Americans weights more than the other two this might not be a bad thing. :tea:

Americans just need to remove all the sugar and salt from their diet.
A good way to get rid of the excess hormones out of the food chain and get back to proper animal husbandry.

I guess I don't really care. He asked a question (maybe ignorant) of a doc, and some rabid anti-Trumpers are so excited, they are trying to make it sound like he was advising kindergarteners and Democrats to drink bleach.

I think he was just blowing more sunshine up your asses.

Oh wait, you aren't in the US. You won't get any sunshine. How is your nation doing? Field hospitals? Shutdowns? Better governance? Or is it just more fun to mock another leader because yours isn't funny or interesting?

You don't have to be a 'rabid anti-Trumper' to find the president's pronouncements on injecting bleach or 'getting a very strong light into the body' ridiculous, nor does finding them ridiculous qualify one as a 'rabid anti-Trumper' - but then again I would say that because I'm not a 'rabid Trump apologist' am I?

and I’ve seen shit a lot worse than a deadly, incurable disease come through those doors,” said the East Texas server, explaining that she had long ago made peace with the fact that she was likely to die the next time she clocked in for a shift at the 24-hour diner franchise, which according to police records has been the site of four armed robberies so far this year. “I honestly have no idea how I’m still alive. You seen some of the deadbeats we get in this place? Every time I refill someone’s coffee I’m afraid I’m interrupting a meth deal. Back in February, we had EMTs wheeling a dead guy out of the men’s room. It’s only a matter of time before a fight breaks out, some shitheel some starts firing a gun, and my number’s up.” At press time, Jefferson was seen wrestling a knife out of a fry cook’s hands after he threatened to stab her over a substitution request in a ham and cheese omelet.

Over more than two centuries, the United States has stirred a very wide range of feelings in the rest of the world: love and hatred, fear and hope, envy and contempt, awe and anger. But there is one emotion that has never been directed towards the US until now: pity.

However bad things are for most other rich democracies, it is hard not to feel sorry for Americans. Most of them did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. Yet they are locked down with a malignant narcissist who, instead of protecting his people from Covid-19, has amplified its lethality. The country Trump promised to make great again has never in its history seemed so pitiful.
