Yeah the surgical masks are mostly useless for the ininfected. But with now some 1 million infected people walking around, who do not know they are infected, it makes a difference. For one, the hassle of masks and shopping makes them plan less shopping trips.

Here in Oz, our numbers are very good at the moment - widespread mask use would probably make only a minute difference. In NY, maybe wiser...

US officials including Surgeon General Jerome Adams and Vice President Mike Pence have urged people against buying and wearing masks to protect themselves from the new coronavirus.

In an interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" on Monday, Adams said wearing face masks could actually increase a person's risk of contracting the coronavirus.

"You can increase your risk of getting it by wearing a mask if you are not a health care provider," Adams said. "Folks who don't know how to wear them properly tend to touch their faces a lot and actually can increase the spread of coronavirus," he added.

Adams' comments Monday reiterate his blaring tweet from the weekend, urging people to "STOP BUYING MASKS." He said that they were "NOT effective" to the general public and noted that the increased demand in masks puts medical professionals at risk.

The one benefit of the public wearing masks in this instance is preventing personal droplets from escaping. To whatever extent, that becomes significant when personal distancing is not observed.

It's not as if the WHO was conspiring with the Red Menace to make the world vulnerable to the bug. The US government's highest ranked medical professional and the Vice President (at least nominally in charge of the US response to the bug) were in consensus with the WHO on the question. Now we have to tie them and the rest of the US administration into the evil cabal. This is getting juicy.
