Re: UK Covid-19 Outbreak
This is sorted by known cases. I was speaking of deaths per million citizens. Click on that column to sort accordingly.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I used to do some research in antivirals and anticancer drugs. The anti-virals were difficult to study, but there was a model our biochemists and phramacologists could use to test a retrovirus, but not actual HIV. We never went very far with them, as we had a better lead for anti-cancer activity. Our drug was almost identical in animals to this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemcitabine
I met the inventor, Larry, several times at conferences. The drug in fact does have antiviral activity too, as did ours. We dropped ours just before we got bought by Germans, because it had no improved side effects, it was just as difficult to use. it did cure animals of tumors.
An MIT professor was working with us, and she was the first to show how the Eli Lilly drug worked on the enzyme level. I am an author on her first paper on it, which I can't find, but the details are here in a later paper:

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
We're pretty much going to have to stay locked down until a vaccine is released (with perhaps some loosening over the summer months). I know they are saying something like 6 months locked down, but that's just because everyone would lose their shit if we were told we'd have to stay locked down for 12-18 months. Unless they come up with some anti-viral treatment that works.

Here they're starting to talk about keeping the schools closed until January.

Re: UK Covid-19 Outbreak
Deaths are a very bad metric as none are investigated. Known cases is not 100% either but we have been saying that about all the figures.

I think the virus is as serious as numbers indicate.pErvinalia wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 8:02 amYou must be torn. On one hand you think it's all a beat-up, but on the other hand you must be gleefully hoping the UK's numbers do reach those levels, given how much you hate the place.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 7:30 amHow can coronavirus models get it so wrong?
Still the numbers are tiny but ja the press needs a story.Analysis depends on data – so predictions for Italy and Spain, where peak has passed, are more reliable than for UK
By August the UK is projected to have recorded more Covid-19 deaths than Italy, Spain, France and Germany combined
I think the media is sowing panic in many dishonest ways, misusing those numbers whenever they can. (look at how they lunged at Trump over his chloroquine comment, while ignoring a nearly identical comment by Cuomo)
Scot Dutchy isn't being that crazy, he's just a bit sloppy about his suspicions. I think nearly everyone has them. Even those who oppose him here will realize that some news companies are using this crisis as they use everything - to sell ad space.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
I watch mostly CNN and German Public Broadcasting. CNN are are nearly exclusively for businesses (mostly travel) that will certainly not benefit from this crisis. The German Public Broadcasters don't rely on ads at all, they are financed by mandatory fees.
Re: The Coronavirus Thread
What do you think of my hilarious joke that:
The highest paid guy at CNN is Nick Sandman!
Do you know what they did to him?
Can you guess as to why they did it?

Re: UK Covid-19 Outbreak
Yes we have. If you search this thread for 'epidemiological' you find posts saying the data is less than complete, but to expect to have that kind of over-arching post-pandemic perspective today is unrealistic - and to cite it's absence as a reason for governments to ignore their public duty is to found an opinion on wishful thinking and ignorance.Scot Dutchy wrote:Deaths are a very bad metric as none are investigated.
