What if the wonder drug is not that specific one but one of the dozens other ones that are currently tested in clinical studies? What if Remdesivir works better than Hydroxy-chloroquin?

Re: The Trump Pandemic
It may help some patients in some circumstances. This is hardly saying "It'll never work!" but the #OUTRAGE doesn't care about that, only about pointing and saying, "No!" It's the same people who claimed pink-haired lesbians wanted to take away your video games or that their casual sexism and racism was just light-hearted banter. If it helps some people then that's great, but it isn't a cure or even a primary treatment.

Re: The Trump Pandemic
Great!
What I'm saying is, I don't have much confidence that a vaccine will be that fast, and a better (though temporary) intervention would be reducing the symptoms (thus the overload-danger to health care)
I don't care what the drug is, as long as it gets the 'Crisis3' diminished.
Fuck, I'll celebrate fucking REIKI if it works on this.

There is no indication so far. It's been around since SARS for viruses, and they had animal models to test it on. It had a measurable effect in Sars in animals. So it's worth testing even if it only cures 1/3 at ventilator stage.
It's up to the doctor and patient to decide at this point.

Anything that can ease the critical load on ventilators (etc...there is more needed that just ventilators)Tero wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 5:11 pmThere is no indication so far. It seems like it's up to doctors and patients, but it's really up to hospitals and administrations, nearly as much.
Apotex was working on production improvements (had a patent ready to go) for chloroquine, but it has lapsed...maybe it's not worth ramping up production.
A biologist pal is not all that hopeful about a vaccine being developed in such a short time. She said that they haven't done it yet (unlike flu vaccines, which they HAVE done a bunch of times)
Her concern is that there isn't a good way to predict how long this vaccine will take to develop.
Re: The Trump Pandemic
You need a drug that even prevents patients from reaching the ICU.
Re: The Trump Pandemic
I would aim higher - a drug that prevents patients from taking a half-day off work.
If symptoms were largely abated, the health care we have here could deal with the edge cases well enough.

That may come, not this year. There was no market for a SARS drug, so little work was done. There is a market for a flu drug, yet we do not have one. RNA viruses like flu and corona are difficult targets for biochemistry. HIV was a bit easier, it uses the cells nucleus, so enzyme targets for RNA/DNA were worked out.

I'm hopeful we'll see one in June. There's studies on dozens of existing drugs going on currently. Results will be available with a few weeks. Since all these drugs are already registered, those that show good results could then be available. Who knows, that might even include the Trump miracle drug.Tero wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 5:39 pmThat may come, not this year. There was no market for a SARS drug, so little work was done. Re: The Trump Pandemic
It would suck if it was true though, because you couldn't use it as more evidence that the orange leprechaun is wrong.
It would suck worse if doctors around the world, in the thousands, already used it, reported it as their best treatment option, or that it was cheap to make...
You would have to find a whole other subject to vilify Trump with...

Re: The Trump Pandemic
So, I have looked at that survey. It's just that. A survey. Of the 6000 doctors surveyed, only 2000 answered the question on the medication. The three top answers were hydrochloride, antibiotics and "nothing", all three with very close values.
So, the drug is about as effective against the virus as antibiotics (which is not effective against the virus and can only help prevent a parallel infection with bacteria) and as effective as "nothing".
What's the interesting piece of information? The interesting piece is that hydrochloride is also the only antiviral drug that was available to be prescribed widely in the first place. So, if you survey for experiences with treatments, it's natural that it will include mostly the one treatment that is actually available.

If I read this before Trump said it was 'promising', I would have thought his comments reasonable.NineBerry wrote: ↑Tue Apr 07, 2020 6:54 pmSo, I have looked at that survey. It's just that. A survey. Encouraging and hopeful even.
If I were cynical, I would dig to see if Trump bought shares in companies producing that drug, and his allies, of course.
Since I'm both, I'll count it as another futile attack on the Big Orange Comedian. The kind that makes me think less of 'trusted media sources'.
