The corrosive effect he's had on the institutions and apparatus of government in the US has almost certainly made it more vulnerable to systematic failures and bureaucratic errors. This is mentioned in the article that Seabass posted.

It's been an ongoing purge of people who carried institutional knowledge and networks of contacts away with them. They've been replaced in many cases (if they have been replaced) by people with questionable qualifications and perhaps limited understanding of the machinery they've been put in charge of.

From all that I've read about the changes Trump has made, that sounds on the money.

Of course it sounds good, it's exactly the kind of rationalizing intelligent people are known for. Whether lemmy can take that analysis and connect it to causes for the situation we find ourselves in now remains to be seen.

Some public health experts say a bigger concern than White House budgets is the steady erosion of a CDC grant program for state and local public health emergency preparedness — the front lines in detecting and battling new disease. But that decline was set in motion by a congressional budget measure that predates Trump.

How much of a role did this play vs lemmy's "corrosive effect", hard to say I guess.

I don't know if you believe that I think Trump (with his obvious delight in taking a wrecking ball to the institutions of the US government) is the only defective element in the US response to the pandemic, but nothing I've written leads to that conclusion. Who do you think instituted the congressional budget measure mentioned in your quote? One possible clue: the Congress that immediately predated Trump was controlled by the Republican party.

We're not letting them in, DeSantis evidently has enough of his scrot left not to bend over for this. They're not U.S. flagged ships, let them go to Liberia or Bahamas or Panama or whatever cheap-ass flag of convenience they're flying. Not at all. I just pointed out that more is needed to understand the situation, and that it may not be possible to link Trump directly to some of the failures.

It doesn't say anything like that. We still don't know whether it works or not. The clinical trials are still ongoing. There's dozens of possible medications in clinical trials currently. We will see in a few weeks which of these (if any) are able best to fight the Rona.

Whenever you heard 'Trump LIED!!!' in media, listen to his whole comment, and you will likely find he was lied about.

That seems to be falling apart with more people tuning in to hear him speak, but plenty still listen to quote-mined snippets which support their prejudice.

Why in the HELL is he setting up to attack Panama though? Are the cartels really that important right now?

I do think that this lockdown must make certain kinds of investigation/enforcment easier. Drug cartels may be criminal, but they are also business, and the essential parts will be more exposed with this lockdown.

So maybe this is just the best opportunity to move on them, but it's creepy as fuck to see them gathering forces around an issue like this. They also indicted a former leader of Venezuela...
