Coronavirus in numbers...and why we really shouldn't panic
NOW, Let’s take one of the worst days so far – the 10th of February. Whilst we were enjoying our Public Holiday, 108 persons in China died of Coronavirus.

But, on the same day
26,283 people died of Cancer
24,641 people died of Heart Disease
4,300 people died of Diabetes
and on that day, Suicide, unfortunately, took more lives than the virus did, by 28 times.
Moreover, Mosquitoes kill 2,740 people every day, HUMANS kill 1,300 fellow humans every day and Snakes kill 137 people every day.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

The difference is that those other causes of death are not increasing (which, in future, may become an exponential increase...)

The International Olympic Committee has told athletes to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics despite fears the threat of coronavirus could delay or even cancel the summer Games.

IOC president Thomas Bach gave his unequivocal backing to the Games going ahead as the committee's executive board met in Switzerland Tuesday (local time) to discuss the event, set to run from July 24 to August 9.

"We are preparing for a successful Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020," Mr Bach said in Lausanne.

"I would like to encourage all the athletes to continue their preparation for the Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 with great confidence and full steam.

"From our side, we will continue to support the athletes and the National Olympic Committees."

Sorry Jim even my lung specialist says it is over-exaggerated. The numbers in China sound huge but how many live there? Those number of deaths are based on fear. For many politicians it has appeared at a good time.
All those stupid masks are a waste of time. Just keep on washing your hands is more important.

Maybe I missed it, but how exactly is Corona spread?
It seems that the initial outbreak was related to food. I expect we need to wash our tomatoes as well?

Do they have the virus? Look at the numbers. If you have the virus and that is a big if wearing a mask will protect others but if you wear one for protection you are wasting your time even if you do come across someone suffering from the virus in the street. The chances of which are very small.
Our food is seldom handled by anyone.

What I understand there was a market in the source city selling wild animals and it made the jump to humans.

You might like to think so. Is all the food you buy pre-packaged?
Even then you do not know how sterile the conditions are where the food is processed, do you?

We in Africa like to go down to the local market and squeeze our tomatoes.

I met someone yesterday who declined to shake my hand due to The Virus, but who happily stood close enough to inhale my damp breath as we casually chatted about it. I decided not to point that out to them - even though I do have a bit of a sore throat atm.

Many people in Central Africa refused to shake hands during the Ebola scare. Even though the nearest case was over 1000km away.

Most fruit and veg is pre-wrapped and washed. If you want to squeeze your tomatoes you can. Food direct from the field is usually handled. Conditions are laid down by law that includes growing conditions.

The same here. We have had flu throughout the winter but now all of a sudden people are getting paranoid.
