Working Out- need help from experience

Post by Chinaski » Mon Aug 17, 2009 11:23 am

So yeah, I don't have time to engage in what many people would consider a "real" sport, one that involves kicking a ball around or something, but to stay in shape I need to do something. So I thought I should start working out seriously. Now, this decision is all well and good, but the fact is that I have no fucking idea how to start and what rhythm to look for. I'm pretty flabby at the moment, excessive boozing and lack of exercise is taking a small toll on me. If someone with work out experience here could give me a few pointers on how to start and what to be sure to do, I'd be very grateful. Cheers!

Join a boxing gym. I did that for about a year and I was the fittest I'd ever been, or since!
It's a good mix of Cardio Vascular and strength/speed work. You don't HAVE to fight/spar, I knew a couple of blokes who just go to learn the technique and get fit.

Swimming and cycling. Both very physical activities.

As a former bodybuilder and 3rd degree black belt in Hapkido, I seriously recommend swimming. :ddpan:

Ask some regulars at a real meat-head body-builders' gym. I've always found them to be really helpful to new people. They'll tell you which exercises to do for the different muscle groups, etc.

But remember, don't exercise so much that other things start to look disproportionately small.....

I wasn't joking about the swimming, but I think Exi's a good bit more current about exercising methodologies than I am. FS, what in particular are you looking to do? Tighten up the flab, or build muscle (Diabonol - breakfast of champions) or get into cardiovascular condition or what? If it's the flab thing, download BBC's "10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight". One kind of flab is fat. Nip that shit in the bud. I've seen pics of you, and you're thin. Once your body gets a good taste of fat, it likes it and it's a bitch to get rid of. I struggle against it daily. Another kind of flab is poorly-toned muscle, i.e., muscle in the early stages of atrophy. For that, even light exercise will suffice. Start with a dozen pushups and squats, get some good stretching in and the like every morning. Keep in mind that situps will build your abdominal muscles, giving you a larger waistline. You may get 6-pack abs, but you'll eventually be needing larger jeans, too. Gradually increase the exercise as it gets easier. Don't torture yourself. The goal isn't pain. If you're moderate and enjoy the experience, you'll stick with it. If you torture yourself, you'll drop it after the initial phase of enthusiasm passes, and then feel guilty about it later. Kinda like masturbation, really. :shifty:

Or just go swimming regularly. No joke, that's probably the best exercise evar.
