40% only gets you president if there is a third party candidate. Ask Nixon.

"Taxes and fees" is a gaffe. We Americans just want to borrow. No taxes!

The Washington Post's deputy editorial page editor raised concerns over the real costs of Sen. Warren's plan to "remake the U.S. health-care system" saying it is "festooned with magic asterisks" and "fanciful."

"I wasn't expecting this," said Varney. "It amounts to panic. Panic that the new front-runner for the Democrats has made a major gaffe that cannot be taken back."

It is easy to win with 40% in the EC. It is so undemocratic.

Bush won with 47%. The 40% win is rare. Nixon won with 43.4 vs 42.7%, Wallace taking the rest. A rare event. Sort of the Trump thing, 301 to 191 in the electoral college. See next post.

If Trump gets 43-44% and a Democrat 47%, then he has a chance at 2016 repeat. 41-42% he would lose even the EC.

The one thing I keep on saying; the USA is not a democracy and here are some of the reasons:

Is America a democracy? If so, why does it deny millions the vote?
Voter suppression as a tactic – from strict ID laws to closing polling places to purging voter rolls – is deliberately making it hard for minority communities in America to exercise their democratic right
This is not about the ludicrous Election College or Senate elections which make it even worse.

This is the report mention in the article:

Electoral Integrity Worldwide

Remember this is not an examination of the system used just its perception.

You're in interesting company, Scot - Seth used to insist that the US was not a democracy too... :tea:

I think for very different reasons. It is not by any measure a democracy. So is the UK. A totally unelected first house? Where else do you have that?

It never really was, the electoral college was instituted for the special purpose of stifling the democratic process in the designation of the president, and the modifications to its functioning that have happened over the course of two and a half centuries have made things even worse.

Plus, the common practices of gerrymandering and denying franchise to certain categories of citizens are also antidemocratic, and the recent abject submission of political personnel and processes to certain moneyed interest groups is just banging the last nail in the coffin.

Are those figures US figures? Because if they are then they're shit and can't be trusted. For all you know they're completely made up, and all Americans vote every election. How could you know?
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

Clearly democracy is only democracy when we get what we want. That's what I've learned from my brief foray into the midst of those who consider themselves "political". You want the reins of power and that's it. That is everything.

Whatever else you're saying, if it isn't directly related to getting that power, it's fucking decorum.

This is the whole point. The EC and the senate are totally undemocratic by any measure and that was their purpose. The great land owners wanted to keep control. They had kicked everyone off their land so how do you keep control? Voter suppression, gerrymandering and down right corruption.
This crap about elections in the USA is just the biggest comedy ever. Keep up the illusion guys.
