Re: The Trump Impeachment
Quite the challenge to the system to even serve Trump papers. Barr was the one brilliant move by Trump, but even he is just stalling now.

Re: The Trump Impeachment
Impeachment improves Trump standing in his base. Effect on independents not clear. Conclusion: Impeachement either does NOTHING or loses Trump several percentage points.

Re: The Trump Impeachment
So if the House votes to impeach, the Republican controlled Senate set the ground rules. And Trump gets to confront and cross examine the witnesses personally on Live TV. This trial is going to look like a campaign rally.
No 5th Amendment bullshit or 'too busy'. You are forced to testify. Ol' Congressman Schiff (chairman of the House Intelligence Committee) is a material witness as the whistle blower went to his office first. Compelling him under oath and being questioned by Trump would be

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

It's Trump who is going to take the 5th!

The Senate only votes. The House interrogates.

That's not how things work.
The House acts as grand jury, gathers initial evidence and lays the actual charge.
The Senate .... oh you know how the rest goes.

Democrats accused President Trump of hiding information about his efforts to make military aide and other U.S. support to Ukraine conditioned upon those investigations. Democrats had earlier said that any attempt to block statements from witnesses, including Sondland, could constitute an impeachable act.
Sondland was scheduled to be deposed Tuesday morning , his lawyer, Robert Luskin, said in a statement.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week rebuked efforts by the committees to interview Sondland and other officials, saying Democratic lawmakers had “harassed and abused State Department employees” by contacting them directly.

But Sondland was willing to testify and didn’t appear on Tuesday at the direction of the State Department, Luskin said.
Sondland was ready to squeal!

The Senate trial began on January 7, 1999, with Chief Justice of the United States William Rehnquist presiding. The first day consisted of formal presentation of the charges against Clinton, and of Rehnquist swearing in all arguants in the trial.
Thirteen House Republicans from the Judiciary Committee served as "managers", the equivalent of prosecutors: Henry Hyde (chairman), Jim Sensenbrenner, Bill McCollum, George Gekas, Charles Canady, Steve Buyer, Ed Bryant, Steve Chabot, Bob Barr, Asa Hutchinson, Chris Cannon, James E. Rogan and Lindsey Graham.
Clinton was defended by Cheryl Mills. Clinton's counsel staff included Charles Ruff, David E. Kendall, Dale Bumpers, Bruce Lindsey, Nicole Seligman, Lanny A. Breuer and Gregory B. Craig.[25]
A resolution on rules and procedure for the trial was adopted unanimously on the following day; however, senators tabled the question of whether to call witnesses in the trial. The trial remained in recess while briefs were filed by the House (January 11) and Clinton (January...)

The House debates the resolution and may at the conclusion consider the resolution as a whole or vote on each article of impeachment individually. A simple majority of those present and voting is required for each article for the resolution as a whole to pass. If the House votes to impeach, managers (typically referred to as "House managers", with a "lead House manager") are selected to present the case to the Senate. Recently, managers have been selected by resolution, while historically the House would occasionally elect the managers or pass a resolution allowing the appointment of managers at the discretion of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. These managers are roughly the equivalent of the prosecution or district attorney in a standard criminal trial.

Re: The Trump Impeachment
July 1974, House committee hearings were televised:
During the hearings, President Nixon attempted to preserve his support in the House by wooing senior figures there, including some conservative Democrats, by inviting them to White House functions or evening cruises on the presidential yacht USS Sequoia.[77] At the same time, statements from White House officials grew increasingly more scathing, the overall impeachment inquiry was derided as a "partisan witch-hunt" and the committee's proceedings derided as "a kangaroo court."[78]

The televised coverage of committee hearings resumed on July 24.[79] The commercial broadcast networks televised the evening sessions while PBS broadcast the morning and afternoon sessions as well;[80] this was after considerable debate about whether such broadcasts were a good idea.[79] The first broadcast was an evening session of the committee on the evening of the 24th and started two days of televised opening-statements by committee members. In total there were six days of 13 hours-per-day of televised coverage, watched by millions of Americans.[80] On the afternoon of Friday, July 26, television viewers watched live as the first Article of Impeachment was read into the record against the President.
On July 25, 1974, Texas Democrat Barbara Jordan delivered a fifteen-minute televised speech before the House Judiciary Committee supporting the impeachment process.[81][82] Jordan's statement on the articles of impeachment is thought to be one of the best speeches of the 20th century and earned Jordan national praise for her rhetoric, morals, and wisdom.[83][81]
