I don’t think they are that good (yet). It’s a bit like the uncanny valley effect. Probably one day soon.

I think it's the translation of the input to images that make sense, and sometimes surprisingly good sense, that's the interesting bit here.

I don't play, but I occasionally come across something that reminds me of how beautiful the game can be.
White is world champion Carlsen. I recommend completing the moves from this position here: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1809687
Black is lost, but how can you know that looking at this position! I guess it's the coordination that makes it attractive, especially when it is not obvious how white's pieces, all being on the first rank, will come together so quickly to dominate the game.
