Re: Your heritage?
The primordial soup, just like everybody else, but as far as I can trace it I am from Austria, even though none of us have lived there for eight or ten generations.
Somewhere around the 1740s Maria Theresa (the dowager empress of Austria to be) betrayed the fact that she too was infected by the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment. Instead of having everybody who is not a roman catholic killed, as was the custom, she ordered each family to load up whatever they can on a single wagon and leave her dominions. Theresa's enemy, Frederick II (the Great), saw a golden opportunity to acquire great quantities of manpower with great disaffection toward the Austrian empire, and invited them all to settle in his kingdom. My father's ancestors settled in East Prussia (now part of Russia) and those of my mother's in West Prussia (now belonging to Poland) All of them did pretty well. My father's father was shot through the leg a little above the knee just after WWI started. It killed his horse. Other than that the families came out of it relatively unscathed.
My mother's family moved to Thuringia where my mother's father became a judge. WWII had more impact on us. Both my grandfathers served as majors or colonels. My mother's father lost everything to the Russians and finished up in Siberia for seven years. My mother lost her brother in the Ardennes push. My father's father lost all his lands to the Soviets. My father finished up as a 21 year old Lieutenant with a piece of mortar shrapnel (he still has it in his shoulder today) as a POW. Somehow they finished up in the American-occupied zone (very lucky, that) of Germany, where my parents eventually met in 1951.
I have a few family photos stretching back to the mid 1800s. One of my sisters has heaps more. Here's one of my father and his father in 1944:

In 1969 my parents packed everything up and we migrated to Australia in order to escape the chance of getting irradiated. They really thought that the cold war hotting up into a nuclear conflagration was a matter of when rather than if. We have been living here ever since, except for my brother who has been doing good works for his Baptist Lord in Thailand for the past ten years or so.

Re: Your heritage?
I'm Finnish with possibly some Russian thrown in on my father's side. Last name is Sadko, which is pure Russian. And no, my father was not a merchant. He came from eastern Karelia. His mom died when he was three, and his dad gave the kids up to the welfare people and left. They were all "auctioned" off to the lowest bidders, ie. I'll take the kid if you pay me $10.00/month. He ended up on a farm. He said it was the shits, even the animals were fed better. When the war started in 1939 he was 16, and he volunteered, apparently anything was better than the farm. He also spoke fluent Russian, so he was needed.
My mom's side of the family has farmed the same farm since 1725 in Finland.
As you can see I'm 100% Canadian.

Re: Your heritage?
Synchronicity. My sperm donor's father died when he was 3, 1930. My paternal grandmother had remarried and had two daughters by her new husband. One day Henry returns from school (age 11) to find the house empty and his clothes in a box on the front porch. He was "rendered into the custody" of the local parson, who took him out of school and put him out as a farm hand. He fled that situation at 16.Woodbutcher wrote:I'm Finnish with possibly some Russian thrown in on my father's side. Last name is Sadko, which is pure Russian. And no, my father was not a merchant. Re: Your heritage?
Half French-Canadian, quarter German and quarter British. I like to think of myself as British, however.
My British ancestors had quite the sense of humor. Rascal they were, building fires on the shore of Cape Cod, which ships mistook for lighthouses, making them steer off course and crash. My Brits ancestors would then loot and pillage the wrecks
Maybe it was my German ancestors. Yes, that's it. It must have been. English gentlemen would never engage in such untoward behavior, surely

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Half German, and half Vietnamese.
On my mother's side, I am a direct descendant of Martin Luther. On my father's side, my Grandfather, Kim Duc Dao was Minister of Public Works under Ho Chi Minh's regime.

Re: Your heritage?
My Nan (maternal grandmother) was German, although she did have something to do with Austrian and/or Swiss in her parentage but I never quite worked out exactly how it worked.
My Dad is apparently (though he didn't know it until comparatively recently) is something like one-eighth Irish (making me one-sixteenth). The rest, on both sides, as far as I know is English.
So there we are, 1/4 German/mixed-central-European, 1/16 Irish, and the rest (11/16) English.
