In the calm of a sunny afternoon, at a Kroger grocery store in the east side of Louisville, Kentucky, a 51-year-old white man named Gregory Bush walked right into the store with a loaded gun, targeted two black customers, and killed them.

The first victim was a black grandfather, Maurice Stallard, who was shopping for groceries with his 12-year-old grandson in tow. Bush shot the grandfather in the back of his head, then continued shooting him after he fell to the ground, according to an account of the arrest citation. Stallard was the father of the city of Louisville’s chief racial equity officer, Kellie Watson, who has served as an executive in the mayor’s office for years.

After Bush killed Stallard, he calmly walked out of the store and tracked down another black customer, this time a woman, and shot and killed her. Standing outside of the store, a witness confirmed that the woman was his mother. When Ed Harrell, a white man in the parking lot, saw Bush coming toward him, he pulled out his own revolver, and yelled to ask what was going on. According to Harrell, Bush replied, “Don’t shoot me. I won’t shoot you. Whites don’t shoot whites.”

Whereas before conservatives insisted the bomber’s method told us everything we needed to know about his ideology, now they insist it tells us nothing at all about his ideology. “Crazy person attacks Republican Congresspeople: blame the crazy. Crazy person sends bombs to Democrats: blame the Republicans,” tweets right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro, whose analysis was recirculated by Donald Trump Jr.

It is of course true that the overwhelming majority of Republicans are not violent. It is likewise true that nothing about conservative ideology or its program requires violent action. Nonetheless, the relationship between the two parties and violence is not symmetrical, and the fact that alleged bomber Cesar Sayoc had a strong identification with Trump and his partisan message is not a coincidence. The Republican Party encompasses an extremist fringe that nurtures violence in a way the Democratic Party does not.

The editorial board of the Wall Street Journal has endorsed far-right Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right candidate who has previously said that he would be "incapable of loving a homosexual son" and that ugly women don't "deserve to be raped."

In an editorial with the headline "Brazilian Swamp Drainer," The Journal writes: "After years of corruption and recession, apparently millions of Brazilians think an outsider is exactly what the country needs. Maybe they know more than the world's scolds."

Bolsonaro, a member of the Social Liberal Party who's been dubbed the "Brazilian Donald Trump," is the frontrunner for the presidency.

No US politician exhorts supporters to commit violent acts as often as Trump does. Sure, he sometimes does so in regard to protesters at his rallies (as If protesting is justification for getting punched in the face), but most people don't care about context. All they hear is stuff like "The hatred in this country is incredible. The divisiveness in the country is incredible. And we're gonna end it. We're gonna do things, and we're gonna end it." Trump knows what he is doing. He knows that his advocacy of violence against protesters will be received as advocacy of violence against any of his opponents. There's a word for what he is doing: dogwhistling.
