US President Donald Trump may actually have a point when it comes to unfair taxes on US goods coming into Europe. That is the finding of a new study by a leading German think tank. Where they differ is how to deal with it: The group urges new talks to lower tariffs across the board, instead of engaging in a tit-for-tat escalation in new taxes.

“The EU is by no means the paradise for free traders that it likes to think,” said Gabriel Felbermayr, director of the ifo Center for International Economics, a division of the Munich-based ifo Institute. The European Union actually comes off as the bigger offender when compared to the US, he added. The unweighted average EU customs duty is 5.2 percent, versus the US rate of 3.5 percent, according to ifo’s database.

So when Mr. Trump complains of “massive tariffs” he is not that far off the mark in several cases. And he does complain. “If the EU wants to further increase their already massive tariffs and barriers on US companies doing business there, we will simply apply a tax on their cars, which freely pour into the US,” the president tweeted earlier this month. “They make it impossible for our cars (and more) to sell there. Big trade imbalance!”

Cars are a particular sore point. Imports into the US are not quite free, but pay a tariff of only 2.5 percent, compared with the EU tariff of 10 percent on US car imports. Some other examples from the EU include a 17 percent tax on apples and 20 percent on grapes.

As with all things Trump, the mainstream reporting is very skewed. Try hard to find the details on the difference in average tariff rates between the US and Europe. Europe has imposed higher tariffs on US goods (on average) than the US imposes on European goods. So, why not make them equal? Why would it be reasonable for Europe, to, for example, have a 10% tariff on automobiles from the US, while the US has a 2.5% tariff on automobiles from Europe? Is that outrageous? An affront to free trade? Or is that just too much "whattaboutism?" We can't talk about MUTUAL tariff relationships, because the only issue is what the US tariff rates are going to be....?

Let's drop the tariffs, or equalize them. Fair?

Why is there a double-standard with Trump? He mocks handicapped people and immigrants and his fans cheer him on. Trump says he doesn't do apologies and they applaud him. Someone says something about him or his family and they lose their shit.

Trump deserves every bit of derision he gets. He's a worthless excuse of a human being who is anathema to the idea that you should leave the planet in a better state than you found it. He has ripped off people. Swindled others. He has conned millions of people into thinking he's going to make them as rich as him while he robs them blind. And he'll never apologise for any of it and probably get away with all of it.

She should've told him to stick his apology up his ass like Michelle Wolfe did. I notice she has her own Netflix show now. Fuck apologising to a weak coward like Trump. Don't sell your integrity.

The only reason she apologized is because the women on CNN and MSNBC, etc., came out and said she had crossed the line. You think the media gives a shit about the fact that it was Ivanka Trump? Of course not. The outrage was because Bee supposedly hurt women in general by using the word.

Trump supporters were hypocritically outraged, of course. But, generally their outrage is ignored. The Trump supporters are just after Bee because she's typically attacking Trump. Roseanne, for example, was famous for purposefully botching the national anthem and then grabbing her crotch at the end of it - totally disrespecting the flat and the anthem. But, when she came out pro-Trump, many Trump supporters stopped caring about that. You can bet, if she came out pro-Hillary, they'd be carping about the national anthem fiasco still.

I agree. Apologizing for that is absurd. First off, she meant it. She planned to say it, and she said it. It was part of her act. She doesn't really think she "crossed the line." She's catering to the Democrats and the Left. They got pissed, so she apologized. If it was only the Trumpsters complaining, she'd tell them to fuck off.

Also, she's a comedian. So, she should say what she wants. Try for funny. If it doesn't work, oh well. Don't apologize for this shit. It just feeds into the feeding frenzy of outrage.
